At the Time of Graduation, There Are Three Things That Every Teen Should Own

Graduating from high school is a unique rite of passage. You transition from being considered an adult in society and in any academic institution you could attend from being regarded as a kid (legally) to an adult. Even discussing your grades with your parents is not permitted by colleges without your permission. Growing up is done. Adulthood is calling. How should you react to the opportunity and difficulty of graduating?

3 Things every teen must have by the time they graduate

Firstly, Own your faith.

If your family is Christian, you have benefited from a variety of favorable situations (household rules, numerous protections, church life). As you explore the world, testing is in store. Riding on the religious success of your parents won’t be sufficient. Now is the moment to decide whether you’re a Christian if you’re not sure (Ecclesiastes 12:1). Because Christianity is founded on historical facts that thousands of individuals in Christ’s day could verify (1 Corinthians 15:3-6, 12–14), some of them died for what they would have known to be untrue, had it been false. To be true, Christianity is a religion unlike any other. Ask away if you have any questions. There is a plethora of information that tackles these and other issues, including the presence of God, the accuracy of the Bible, the resurrection of Jesus, and Jesus’ exclusivity as the one path to God.

It’s important to pursue relational evangelism, particularly in college, but you should also cultivate connections that advance your faith (Proverbs 27:17). Matthew 5:13–16 tells us to be salt and light, which implies that we already are. We must be unique in order to affect change in the world. An appealing alternative to the wasteland of hedonism and consumerism that is pervasive on college campuses and in young culture in general is holiness in living coupled with a gracious manner.

Thirdly, Own the decisions you make.

Analyzing circumstances, considering your options, and using critical thinking are like utilizing muscles. Flabbiness results from inactivity, whereas strength comes through repetition. There are many decisions to be made in the next few years, including which college (or trade) to attend, what to study, how to pay for it, and more. It would be lovely if God spoke with an audible voice, but that hasn’t been my experience. We ought to pray (James 1:5). We should ask reliable individuals who are familiar with us for advice (Proverbs 15:22). As they indicate where, over time, we could be most beneficial in this world for the benefit of others and the glory of God, we should think about where we’ve been successful and what we like doing.
