3 Things That Can Hinder You From Speaking In Tongues

Speaking in tongues is one of the proofs that a Christian has received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Praying in tongues according to the Bible means speaking to God directly. “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” 1 Corinthians 14:2. I can’t tell you all the advantages of speaking in tongues in this post (if God permits, I will do it in my next post) but I emphasised that it’s important that Christians should pray in tongues. If you find it difficult to pray in tongues, it could be because of any of the following:

1. Unbelief

I once prayed for a friend to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit but it didn’t work. After praying for a long time with him, I perceived to pause the prayers and ask him some questions. Do you know what I discovered? I discovered that he didn’t believe that every Christian can speak in tongues. He said he taught that it is for specific individuals. His problem was unbelief. Although we were praying and trusting God for a divine release, his heart was not open to receive it.

I had to sit down with him and show him that all those who were in the upper room in the book of Acts of the Apostles spoke in tongues. It’s wasn’t only Peter and James that spoke in tongues.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts of the Apostles 2:4

More so, Mark 16:17 says, “And these signs shall follow them that believe: in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.”

Jesus didn’t say that the signs will follow some who believe. It’s from these Scriptures his understanding was built such that after we prayed a little, he busted out in tongues.

Unbelief due to lack of knowledge can hinder you from speaking in tongues. The Bible says, “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let, not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.” James 1:6-8.

You can build up your faith by studying the word of God, listening to sermons from servants of God, and seeking understanding of doctrines from those who are ahead of you spiritually.

2. Sin

To receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and to speak in tongues, one has to be sanctified by the blood of Jesus Christ. If your heart is open to receive the Holy Spirit, and you believe that the Holy Spirit can pray through you in tongues, then, only sin and distraction may hinder you from speaking in tongues as we’ve seen earlier.

Any unconfessed sin is a big obstacle to speaking in tongues. Confess all sins and ask God to wash you by the blood of Jesus, pray by faith and see what will happen.

What does speaking in tongues mean?

This isn’t a formula. I am only telling you what the Bible reveals that must be in place before God can mix with you. It’s a scriptural principle. Before you can lift your voice to pray to God in tongues of men and Angels. It’s a wonderful experience.

3. Distraction

When you open a tap, water runs into your bucket. What if you remove the bucket immediately after the water began to rush? Will it be full? Never! This is how it works in the spiritual realm. Your heart must be concentrated and undisturbed if you must receive the infilling and speak in tongues.

In conclusion, if you have unwavering faith, have a quiet spirit and have confessed all your sins before God, go ahead and open your mouth: the Lord shall fill it with strange tongues. You don’t need someone to lay hands on you, only believe, open your mouth and the Lord will do the rest. May God visits you and fills you with His Spirit; amen.
