3 Ways to Rekindle Your Children Love for God

How to kindle a Lifelong Love for God in Your Child at Any Age

Each of us has seen something similar. That bored look our teenagers (or preteens) give off whenever the topic of God or Christianity is brought up. Whether it’s a nagging problem or more overt, we all see that our children have a hard time focusing on spiritual matters.

Anyone who has put time and effort into shaping the futures of young people understands the paralyzing effects of indifference. As a youth pastor, I often encountered a group member who didn’t seem to care. When young kids aren’t paying attention, it’s hard to teach them the truth. And yet, I was unfazed by this setback. I really cared about my pupils and wanted them to have strong convictions. Here are three insights that I gained as a teacher and which I believe have inspired my students and children:

Show Some Feeling

Our children are always aware of when we are really looking forward to something, whether it a trip to the movies, a game, or a meal at a favorite establishment. Such occasions are highly sought for because of their rarity. However, for many of us, going to church on a weekly basis is the extent of our Christian experience. It might be why our youngsters find their spiritual life boring and mundane. We can only hope that our children share our enthusiasm for the Christian life of intellectual, emotional, and experiential fullness if we can model it for them.

My children recall with fondness the lively conversation that surrounded our dinner table whenever our friends came over to discuss theology or apologetics. The clarity of these recollections exceeds that of any religious experience they may have experienced. Express your deep faith to your children. A well-trained individual will inevitably take on the characteristics of their trainer (Luke 6:40 NIV). Aim to be a role model educator, leader, or parent to the young Christians in your life.

Get Rid of Impediments

There are times when we face challenges that prevent us from developing into the committed Christians we wish to be. These roadblocks might be insurmountable if they aren’t dealt with. If we wish to kindle an enthusiasm for God, we need to get rid of two things first.

Individual sin: Unresolved or unaddressed sin is often at the heart of a lack of motivation. If your own sin makes you want to run away from God, it’s going to be tough to devote yourself wholeheartedly to God. Sin is a problem for everyone, even today’s youth. “Because lawlessness will be expanded, the affection of many will become chilly,” the Bible predicts, referring to the effects of increasing levels of sin on humanity (Matthew 24:12). One possible explanation for indifference is sin, so keep that in mind. Look within and urge the young people you’re leading to do the same.

As a youth pastor in Southern California, I frequently felt like I was up against an ever-expanding collection of alternative activities for young people’s time. Many of my kids’ families put extracurricular activities like club sports ahead of our group’s potential for growth and learning. If you consider their value and worth in addition to the pressure to compete, it’s easy to see how this may occur. However, we need to control our other interests if we are to cultivate a desire for God. Our priorities determine everything.

Always follow a “what” with two “whys”

At last, a broad, uncomplicated technique may help spark a movement that can be channeled toward the truth of Christianity. Two Whys for Every What” is the name I’ve given to this method. We have all done our best as ministers, parents, and teachers to help our children understand the truth. What do we think God is like? In what ways does Christianity make its claims? When it comes to weighty ethical questions, what does the Bible have to say? Whether at home, in the classroom, or in the pews, most of us have had similar conversations. However, it’s possible that our youth won’t be moved by even the most basic statements about who God is and what Christianity teaches.

For this reason, I advocate doing two more things. Always remember to include two whys in addition to the whats while talking to the young people in your life. To begin with, please explain why your assertion is correct. When a young kid asks us to explain a claim, we may be tempted to fall back on “because the Bible says so,” as in the case of teaching about the nature of God. But you should spend some time explaining the philosophical or evidentiary backing that goes beyond what’s taught in the Bible. Millennials and Gen Zers are curious in our rationale for holding these beliefs. The best way to get people fired up is to show them that the Christian worldview is consistent with common sense and supported by solid evidence.

The next step is to teach young people why any of this is important. Now that we’ve established the veracity of our claims and shown how the data backs them up, we need to tell them why they should care. If this is true, how will it change their circumstances? What changes occur in their sense of identity or perspective as a result of this? Which way does this truth lead people, and how does it safeguard them?

The way we preach, educate, or advise the young people in our life may be transformed by adopting this simple strategy of asking two whys for every what.
