William Paton Mackay was born in Edinburgh on May 13 1839. He was a medical doctor that sold his Bible for a bottle of alcohol. The event that unfolded after then was amazing. Read the story below.
William was raised in a Christian family, at age 17 he wanted to study in the University. His mother bought a Bible for him and wrote his name and one verse in it. He started well but you know some people only behave well in the presence of their parents or pastors. As time passed by, he began to drift from his godly upbringing to an unbeliever.
He started drinking, he drank heavily to the point that he had no money to buy alcohol. He sold his Bible to buy whisky. Fortunately for him, he graduated as a medical doctor and went on to work in one of the hospital in the city.
As he was on duty one day, a patient was rushed in. While doing rounds and writing patients report, he met this man. This man had been told that his situation is fatal that he would die. The man haven made up his mind started screaming, “bring me my book!” he cried. “I need my book!”. The words of this dying man sank deep in the heart of William. Later on, the man died. He died peacefully. Out of curiosity, William wanted to know what kind of book the man read that gave him such peace. He went to the room where the man died and looked for the book; lo and behold, the book was a Bible and not just any Bible but his own he sold to buy whisky. He went to his office and had an encounter with God. He cried for mercy and he wrote a song afterwards. Here is stanza one of the song he wrote.
We praise thee O God
For the Son of thy love
For Jesus who died and is now gone above
Refrain
Hallelujah thine the glory
Hallelujah Amen
Hallelujah thine the glory
Revive us again.
