Breaking! Sola Allyson Loses Backup Singer

Fans have been sending in their condolence messages to the popular gospel singer, Shola Allyson Obaniyi who lost another back-up singer to the cold hand of death.

She took to her Facebook page, TheShola Allyson to drop a dirge for one of her backup singers, Gbenga who died recently. Let me briefly take you through Sola Allyson’s biography.

Sola Allyson-Obaniyi is a Nigerian gospel singer, musicologist, vocal trainer, public figure, counsellor, mother, wife and mentor to younger gospel singers. She has won several awards to her credit.

Sola Allyson was born in the early 1970s. She grew up in Ikorodu, a suburb area in Lagos State. There, she was able to acquire her primary education both in Anglican Primary School, Ikorodu Lagos and Shams-el-deen Grammar School. According to her, she didn’t grow up to have a fair share of parental love and affection which subsequently affected her life before she found her way to Christ. In 1997, Sola Allyson gained admission into the Polytechnic Ibadan, Ibadan to study Music Technology majoring in voice and minoring in music. Little wonder Sola’s songs are always unique, top-notch, mind-blowing, spirit-lifting and exceptional.

However, she bagged a Higher National Diploma (HND) some years after. She came into spotlight when she released a hit track titled “Eji Owuro’ and this song gained massive recognition in the year of its production till date. She had worked with music professionals like Dr. Yinka Ayefele, late Gbenga Adeboye, Adekunle Gold, Pasuma, Cobhams Asuquo and so on. She was the brain behind Gbeje fori, Imuse, Iri, Eji owuro, Obinrin nimi, Isinmi, Ebe, among others. She got married to her darling husband, Toyin Obaniyi in 2003 who happens to be a member of the choir which she belonged to. They are blessed with three wonderful kids – Ayobami, Mopelola and Obafunmiwo.

Death is inevitable but what if it comes when no one expects. Recall that about a year ago, she lost Esther Oladunni, one of her favorite backup singers who majored in taking the alto part. If you were privileged to be at the Mass 3.0 that was held in Ibadan at Trans Amusement Park in March 2018, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Along the line, Sola couldn’t help but to mourn Esther while singing on stage, emotions flowed like a river cruising ceaselessly on its shore, she was deeply pained that Esther didn’t wait to fulfil purpose. She left when it started becoming sweet. In fact, it got to a certain point where she had to call to be given a bottle of water as her throat became dry and hoarse. The audience felt it too. The atmosphere changed but she was quick to shift back to the usual serenity that accompanies her performance.

Just as she began getting over Esther’s death, she lost another backup singer whose name is Gbenga, a young, vibrant, talented, dedicated and determined tenor singer. In her Facebook post, Sola Allyson recounted how Gbenga wept uncontrollably immediately after they ended their live performance on one occasion. All effort to know what went wrong with him proved abortive. She asked him what was wrong but he said “It is personal”. What pained everyone most is that this same guy was present at the Mass 4.0 that was held last year in Akure, Ondo State. He was the only guy among her back up singers, well suit up with much agility. He took the tenor lead. Gbenga had an angelic voice like that of a beautiful lady. His absence was much felt by everyone, especially his boss, Sola Allyson.
