Faith-driven streaming services can’t compete with the ever-growing number of entertainment giants flooding into homes. But maybe they don’t have to.
Neal Harmon grew up on a farm in Idaho. He talks about how movies gave him and his three brothers ideas for stories. “I remember watching Swiss Family Robinson and then building treehouses in the trees behind our house,” he said. “After watching Star Wars, we would jump in the canals during a big snowstorm and pretend the Empire was coming to attack. Entertainment changed how we thought about the world.”
Now, Harmon and his brothers started VidAngel in Provo, Utah. VidAngel is one of the many faith-based streaming video-on-demand companies that have sprung up in the entertainment industry.
In 2018, people in the US spent more money on digital entertainment at home than at movie theaters for the first time. Since most movie theaters closed this spring because of the COVID-19 crisis, people’s spending habits have changed even more. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and other billion-dollar platforms are fighting it out. In early 2020, HBO and NBCUniversal will also launch two more major platforms.
Christian parents say that navigating the different kinds of content requires tech-savvy wisdom. Julie Foust, a part-time teacher and mother of four from Albany, Illinois, said, “Today, you have to be more careful as a parent.” “We need to be aware that the world we live in has a lot of bad things in it, even if we want to watch shows with our kids for fun.”
There are more than 140 different services that let you stream movies and TV shows right now. Some of them, like Pure Flix, VidAngel, Christian Cinema, and Minno, have become popular with Christian families over the past ten years.
