An innocent 7-year-old child was shot and taken to the hospital on Sunday morning in Chicago as he and his family were on their way to church.

The shooting of 7-year-old Legend Barr occurred just before 11:30 a.m. outside the Universal Community Church, where his grandmother serves as pastor. After Barr and his parents parked their car, the assailant opened fire from the pastor’s SUV.

“As we rounded the corner, the man brandished a large machine gun and opened fire on our vehicle. At one point, I heard a yell from the rear of the car, “I was shot!” It was my kid “Keshawna Barr, his mom, said thus to Fox 32 Chicago.

While lying in the hospital, Barr told the source, “I saw the [bullet] went through my jeans, and my favorite shirt was wrecked that I received for my birthday.” The bullet had broken his femur.

Police in the neighborhood at the time of the incident were able to track down and apprehend the culprit.

Deputy Chief Larry Snelling told ABC 7 that he was “quite proud of the officers from the 5th District” for their rapid action. “They were already in the neighborhood for post-shooting violence reduction efforts and could react quickly. They gave pursuit, and ultimately caught the criminal.”

Barr is the fifth kid to have been shot while riding in a vehicle in Chicago this year, reports The Christian Post. However, the other four people who were shot all passed away.

And this is the second shooting at Universal Community Church this year. At a funeral in July, three individuals were shot in a drive-by.

Let’s start naming the folks “out there” who are “shooting and murdering children, killing each other, killing any human being,” as Snelling put it.

Barr’s damaged femur will be operated on soon, since he is a dedicated basketball player.

The internet campaign has so far brought in $4,308 (of a desired $5,000).

On Facebook, Keshawana said that she prayed the killer of her son “goes to prison for life.”
