Christian Woman Killed at Central Nigerian Church Site

A Christian woman was killed in central Nigeria at a church site.

Lyop Dalyop was sweeping and cleaning the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) building in Bangai village, Riyom County, when she was attacked by “armed men suspected to be Fulani militias,” according to an attorney who runs the Emancipation Centre for Crisis Victims in Nigeria.

Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri told Morning Star News in a text message, “The incident happened around 8:05 p.m., not long after she went to sweep the COCIN Church, Bangai, in preparation for Sunday morning worship service.” “She was shot in the head by the armed Fulani men.”

He said that in June, two Christians were shot and hurt in Chaha village, Jos South County, by people who were thought to be Fulani herdsmen. On June 4, around 8:30 p.m., the Fulani attacked the village in the Vwang District.

Stephen Gyang, who was 24 years old, was shot and killed. Isaac Gyang and the Rev. Davou Ishaya John of the COCIN were also hurt and were being treated in the hospital, Mwantiri said. Isaac Gyang is said to be in critical condition at Jos University Teaching Hospital because of his injuries.

As the pastor and Isaac Gyang came back from a church event, they were attacked by the Fulani. When Isaac Gyang’s brother, Stephen Gyang, tried to take them to a hospital, he was shot dead, Mwantiri said.

Six COCIN workers had to leave southern Plateau state because of attacks, said the Rev. Moses Gonam, coordinator of the COCIN Community Mission (CCM). Pastor Gonam said that COCIN pulled its workers out of Kyamsangi, Kanam County, because the area is becoming less safe, which has forced many Christians to leave.

He said that most people who work for the church in northern Nigeria are in danger and are being persecuted.

“If it weren’t for the skill of our missionaries and their willingness to serve in spite of the danger, we would have had to close down some of our mission fields.”

In a recent report, the UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Belief (APPG) said that some Fulani follow radical Islamist ideology. The Fulani are mostly Muslim and live in Nigeria and the Sahel. They are made up of hundreds of clans with many different lineages. Most Fulani do not hold extremist views, but some do, according to the report.

The APPG report says,

“They use a similar strategy to Boko Haram and ISWAP [Islamic State West Africa Province] and make it clear that they want to attack Christians and strong symbols of Christian identity.”

Christian leaders in Nigeria say they think that herdsmen who attack Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt do so because they want to take over Christians’ land and force Islam on them because desertification has made it hard for them to keep their herds alive.
