Christians Protests in Oyo State Over Alaafin’s Plan to take over their 16 Plots of Land (PHOTOS)

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, is currently in the storm of a raging crisis with members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Oyo town over a parcel of land said to belong to the Christian body.

The members of the association on Sunday, July 5, took to the streets of Oyo town, denouncing the alleged moves by the traditional ruler to take over 16 plots of land at the Ayetoro land scheme, Oyo, which the association said was acquired many years ago and which was meant to be used as a camp ground.

Carrying placards with various inscriptions, some clerics and other Christian faithful denounced what they called illegal act of the traditional ruler in confiscating the land meant for to serve as a camp ground of one of the Christian denominations in the town.

The Christians, led by the CAN chairman in Oyo zone, Apostle Michael Adeleke, marched from the First Baptist Church, Isokun, and other areas of the town before they all converged on the parcel of land, where they expressed their opposition to the takeover of the land.

While speaking during the protest, Apostle Adeleke asked the state government and concerned citizens to come to their aid and stop the Alaafin of Oyo from taking over the 16 plots land at Ayetoro Scheme, Oyo.

He alleged that when some Christians elders visited the plots a few weeks ago, they were informed by some people that the traditional ruler was interested in the land, adding that those who informed them added that the traditional ruler would want to have a meeting with them.

He added that when they visited the palace of the monarch, they were shocked when they were told that they would have to leave the land without providing any alternative for them.

As of the time of this report, efforts to get the reaction of the traditional ruler proved abortive as his media aide, Lukman Salau, did not respond to various telephone calls and text messages sent to him.
