Churches That Came Out Of the Aladura Movement To Establish An Independent Denominations

The Aladura Movement was a group formed as a prayer arm of the Anglican church. The establishment of the group dates back to 1918, precisely during the influenza pandemic that ravaged the entire globe. The group was formed out of the Emmanuel Anglican Church , Ijebu Ode, Ogun State,Nigeria. Nigeria was not left out of the global chaos then, as many died in thousands before the pandemic ended. The formation of the Aladura group is exactly over a century old this year 2021. The group later metamorphosed from just a mere prayer group to become the first indigenous pentecostal movement in Nigeria, The Precious Stone Church. The founding members of the Aladura group was led by Pa Shadare who later Eshinsinade. Also Pa Odubanjo, and JL Ajayi. They were later joined by Prophetess Sophia Ajayi (Odunlami).

The Aladura Movement moved from a prayer group to metamorphosed into several forms. From the prayer group there sprung, The Precious Stone Church, to Faith Tabernacle, affiliated to an American denomination by the same name. From there it became The Nigerian Apostolic Church, and The Apostolic Church. Later Pa Shadare, moved out of the Apostolic Church and reverted to the initial group, The Precious Stone Church, followed by the founding members, Odubanjo, Odunlami, and JL Ajayi. We shall review few of the churches that came out of the Aladura Movement.

1. The Apostolic Church:

The Apostolic Church was first named The Nigerian Apostolic Church, formed from the Precious Stone Church by the Aladura prayer team. It was affiliated to the American parent church, in the United States of America. The church still remains relevant till date, but now as an independent indigenous controlled church. Pa Shadare and Odubanjo, with the others left when their doctrine does not tally with that of the Western missionaries. The headquarters of the Apostolic Church is in Ketu Lagos State, Nigeria.

2. Christ Apostolic Church:

Around 1938 and 1941, Apostle Ayo Babalola and others came out of the Apostolic church to form Christ Apostolic church. The emergence of Apostle Ayo Babalola sparked a great move of the holy spirit, and a turn around period for the Aladura Movement. The group became more divinely oriented. The Oke Ooye 1930 Revival sparked the begining of an immense spiritual and pentecostal awakening within the Aladura Movement, and the discovery of divine ministry of several of the members. It was from there Ayo Babalola and others carved out to form Christ Apostolic Church. Christ Apostolic Church remains till today, with headquarters in Ibadan, Oyo State of Nigeria.

3. The Cherubim And Seraphim Church:

The cherubim and Seraphim also came out of the Aladura Movement around 1925 and 1926. The movement was led by Pa Moses Orimolade Tunolase and Christiana Abiodun Akinsowon. The group was also prayer oriented and spiritually disciplined. The group was not so long together, as they later separated I to other groups.

4. The Precious Stone Church:

Being the base of the Aladura Movement, the Precious Stone Church still remain and continues normal ministerial activities,having broken away from the Apostolic church to revert back to Precious Stone Church. Pa Shadare and the others went to form the Precious Stone, thereby maintaining the intact continuation of the parent fold.

5. The Church of The Lord, Aladura:

The church of The Lord Aladura fold was established by Pa Josiah Ositelu, a catechist who was dismissed from the Anglican church as a result of his intense spiritual gifts and manifestations. The church was formed in 1930 and later became a widespread phenomenon in impactful spiritual activities and moves of apostolic ministrations.

All the above listed offspring of the Aladura Movement are still existing. The foods have become very big with outstanding spreads beyond the borders of the African continent. The Aladura Movement was responsible for the indigenous apostolic movement in Nigeria, and across the borders to some other African countries.
