Five ways the church can fight fake news

Here Are 5 Ways the Church Can Fight Fake News

While “fake news” became a political term during the 2016 election cycle, deception under the guise of “news” has been around since the beginning of recorded history. This discourse about truth as something that can be understood, identified, and sorted out from falsehoods is encouraging for Christians in our postmodern, post-Christian world. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest chances we have right now to expose people to the One who is Truth.

STEP ONE: BE HONEST PEOPLE

Many Christians believe that the Bible contains the first untruth. He deals in deceit and stands opposed to anything that is genuine in terms of goodness, beauty, and truth. The ancestor of all fibs warps our perceptions. It’s his oldest strategy, and once his hooks are in a person’s head, nothing short of physical release from sin and death can make them see things differently. Some people, led astray by a liar, come to believe that God is wrong about what is good. Identity, God, sexuality, and morality all become murky concepts for them as they age. Truth itself is distorted, and people are duped into swapping the truth about God for falsehoods.

Christians have the responsibility of becoming Christ’s image bearers in this world.

BE INFORMED

That which is true is:

Is there any reason why anyone should trust us? In a society when the father of lies has so many operators, how can we build credibility, earn the right to be heard, and communicate The Truth?

Christians have a special responsibility to ensure that truth ultimately wins out. The Gospel’s goodness and beauty are made manifest in our lives. That rules out any possibility of lying or trickery. Trust from others requires not engaging in deceptive practices. Are we able to rely on you to always be completely honest? Our credibility as Christians will suffer if people can’t rely on us to tell the truth in all aspects of our life.

DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO SPOT THE LIES

There are always impostors in every age. Some of the competitors today are fighting for our attention and love in the same manner that beauty pageant contenders parade their ideas before us in the hopes of winning us over to their point of view. Just a few instances from my book “Speak the Truth”:

It’s not that Miss Nomer doesn’t realize God has a name; it’s just that she enjoys calling Him names that diminish His majesty, holiness, and mystery. She often refers to God by his roles, qualities, analogies, or a name that leaves open the idea that God is a figment of her imagination.

She fails at character development by portraying Christ in a way that is at odds with the teachings of Scripture. Because she doesn’t believe in the God of the Old Testament, she finds the revelation that Jesus is the second person of the Trinity to be offensive. She portrays Jesus as apart from the Father in this way.

She’s more of a victim than an antagonist, Miss Understood. She goes to church and follows Christian blogs, but she doesn’t think anything of celebrating Mardi Gras, playing in a Sunday morning soccer league, or augmenting her religion with other forms of spirituality.

People fall prey to the father of lies when they accept falsehoods about God propagated by these half-truths and blatant lies. They have a skewed view of God, denying His existence, His actions, His desires, and the significance of His existence. As such, it is the Christian’s duty to expose the cultural stereotypes about God for what they really are. And to substitute live instances of the whole Gospel for them, so that people everywhere might see God for who He truly is.

EXTEND YOUR HAND IN TRUTH

Where do we turn when we hear lies being preached at church? In other words, we adhere to what is written in the Bible. Scripture quotes from Jude 17-23 are as follows:

But lovers, don’t forget what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. That “in the end time there will be scoffers, pursuing their own wicked impulses,” they warned you about, has come to pass. Those without the Spirit of God in the world are the ones who sow discord. But you, dear, by praying in the Holy Spirit and strengthening your most holy faith, maintain yourself in God’s love while you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to everlasting life. And offer pity with terror, hating even the robe soiled by the body; and save those who doubt. [Italics mine]

Take Biblical Action

Here are some of the things Jude instructs us to do:

That means we can’t just duck and run when the world’s beauty pageant parades down our life’s runways at us. Jude describes it as being in close proximity to wrong teaching in the hopes that some people would be rescued from it. How, therefore, do individuals manage to tear themselves away from the hypnotic glow of the fire? As a result of the integrity of the Gospel and the high quality of our lives. Yes, we are always prepared to give an account for the reason for our hope, but more than that, we simply live such good lives among the pagan that, despite the fact that we are persecuted by the world’s leaders, the world at large is drawn away from its darkness by the fruit of love that is found among us.
