On a recent trip to Uganda, ICC staff members visited Twaha Timothy, a former Muslim who has recently converted to Christianity.
Twaha had been a devout Muslim, but one day he fell ill and asked for prayer from his imam. In response, the imam asked him for money and told him to go to people practicing witchcraft and they would heal him there. Twaha told ICC that it “made his heart annoyed that his imam would not pray for him and asked for money.” He wondered why he had fallen ill and his Christian friend who came to visit him pleaded with him to go to his church and ask for prayer.
Twaha went to the church that night and asked for prayer. He told ICC, “Reaching the church, I was prayed for. Because of my illness, I could not speak. While they were praying for me, I started to speak. To my surprise, I found myself thanking Jesus. While I was thanking Jesus, my heart felt light, and then suddenly, my heart changed. After my heart changed, I told the Reverend to please baptize me immediately. Then they baptized me. Since I have been baptized, my family members, the rest of my clan and even the imam have been baptized.”
After his miraculous healing and the baptism of him and his family, Twaha and his family were chased from their village by Muslims who wanted to kill them because of Islamic law, which calls for the killing of converts. Twaha’s brother, a Muslim, found them and told them if they stayed where there were, they would be killed. Their family needed to relocate to a new village in order to survive.
Sheila, Twaha’s wife, who was present when Twaha was healed, recounted her moment of conversion. “Something that touched my heart, because my husband was sick and had stopped speaking, when I saw him speaking in the church, I said ‘This is the true religion, and I should follow Christ. That one has touched my heart.’”
At first, Sheila was scared to convert to Christianity and had doubts about becoming a Christian, but now her and her family believe that Christianity is the true religion.
