‘Heartfelt’ plea for peace in Ukraine from European bishops

The bishops of Europe have issued a “heartfelt” plea for peace in Ukraine.

The “great grief” of Catholic bishops throughout Europe has been voiced at the “horrific human suffering” in Ukraine.

The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) issued the “heartfelt” call for peace at the conclusion of its fall plenary conference.

Foreseeing “disastrous implications for mankind,” the bishops said an escalation of the conflict must be avoided at all costs.

We are heartbroken about the loss of life and injury to loved ones in Ukraine as a result of the savage military assault started by the Russian government, they added.

Those affected by this tragedy are in our thoughts and prayers, and we offer our deepest condolences to their loved ones.

Additionally, the statement emphasizes their “closeness” to the millions of Ukrainian migrants.

“We would want to convey our closeness especially to the millions of refugees, primarily women and children, who have been forced to abandon their homes,” the bishops added.

Recent events have caused us grave anxiety since they might lead to a catastrophic escalation of the ongoing conflict.

Europe as a whole is feeling the effects of the conflict, as stated in the statement.

Our hearts go out to everyone experiencing severe economic difficulty as a result of the current oil crisis, inflation, and other factors.

An plea for peace and a call for both parties to enter into peace negotiations conclude the message.

It was stated that “we too make a strong appeal to the aggressors, immediately to suspend the hostilities,” and that “all parties should open themselves up to negotiation of’serious proposals’ for a just peace” in order to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict that does not violate international law or Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
