How am I supposed to maintain My Emotions in Check as a Teenager?
How it comes about
When you’re going through the changes of puberty, you may feel both happy and sad. But you might be surprised by how erratic and unpredictable your feelings can be even when you are well into your teens.
If your moods are all over the place and making you feel confused, remember that many of these feelings are caused by hormonal changes and the normal insecurities and uncertainties that come with growing up. The good news is that you can understand your feelings and learn how to deal with them.
The truth is:
When you are young, it is important to learn how to control your feelings because you will need this skill in many situations as an adult.
Bad feelings are like bumps in the road. Skill lets you avoid the worst ones and make the ride smoother.
There are three things you can do. “A true friend always shows love and is a brother who is born for times of trouble,” says the Bible. —Proverbs 17:17.
“A close family friend is like an aunt to me. She really listens to what I have to say, and I feel comfortable talking to her about anything. She’s proud of me when I’m right, and if I’m wrong, she tells me in the best way possible.” —Yolanda.
Tip: Instead of only talking to your friends, who may be going through the same ups and downs emotionally as you, talk to a parent or another trusted adult.
Write. The Bible tells the story of Job, who was very sad and said, “I will vent my complaints.” I’ll speak up in my terrible pain!” (Job 10:1) You can “speak out” in other ways besides talking to someone. One way is to write about how you feel.
“I always have a small notebook with me. I write about things that make me sad when they happen. Writing is a great way for me to relax. —Iliana.
Tip: Keep a journal where you can write about how you feel, what made you feel that way, and how you might handle it. You can do that with the help of the worksheet that goes with this article.
Pray. “Cast your load on Jehovah, and he will carry you,” says the Bible. He will never let the good person fall.” —Psalm 55:22.
