How do you tell that someone is really mature in the spirit? Is it when they are able to spend 3 hours praying in tongues? Or is it when they know the Bible up to the point where they can tell the Greek and Hebrew words for various passages of scripture? I assure you that none of these matter when it comes to spiritual maturity. What matters is the fruit you produce.
You see, a plant will only produce fruit when it is mature. A seed you plant today will not produce any fruit. It’ll take time to grow, and you might see leaves and a stem, but when it is fully mature, the fruit you planted will be seen. It’s the same with us. The seed of God’s word was planted in us the day we gave our lives to Jesus, and the more time we spend growing in the faith, the faster our fruits will be seen.
The primary fruit that shows that you are mature is the fruit of love. The Bible says in Galatians 5:22;
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith…”
If you noticed, love was mentioned first, and because of that, we can say that love carries priority. This is not just my personal opinion; the Bible says the same thing. 1 Corinthians 13:13;
“And now abideth faith, hope, charity (love), these three; but the greatest of these is charity (love).”
Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo also said this. He even called walking in love, the ultimate test of maturity.
How will people know that you are a disciple of Jesus? They will know by the way you show love. This is what Jesus said will be the acid test for his disciples. Jesus also said that you will know people by their fruits.
