- “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;” Ref:Ephesians 5:19-null Scripture encourages us to be very intentional about the songs we sing in.
By now, you already know that a song can have God’s name in it and yet not edify your spirit.
To be edified by a song, you must watch out for songs with lyrics that are consistent with New Testament realities.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
Colossians 3:16
Worship is lyrical theology. Your confessions must be consistent with what Christ has done for you and who you are because of what he has done.
For instance, there are some songs that King David could sing that would not be true about you.
The man in Christ is not worried that God would ‘cast him away’ from his presence. Jesus has already promised never to leave or forsake you.
When you believe in Jesus, you become the temple of God. He lives inside you. That means that songs that have to do with you entering the presence of God should also not appeal to you.
You carry the presence of God. When you go to church or to fellowship with other believers, God is there because you are there.
Songs that have to do with you being an empty vessel who is perpetually thirsty don’t speak well of the man in Christ.
Jesus said:
“Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life”
John 4:13-14
God has blessed you with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. He died for your sins and rose again for your justification.
You have been sealed with the Holy Ghost of promise. When you worship, sing songs that are consistent with these truths.
