On the 5th of June, 2022, gunmen invaded and murdered 40 worshippers in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State. The heinous act perpetrated by the gunmen has been condemned by the Federal Government, who promised to make sure that all perpetrators are caught and brought to book.

Today being the 17th of June, 2022, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, celebrated a funeral mass in honour of 22 persons who died in the Church days ago, admist tears from those who were in attendance, including Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State.

During his tearful speech, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu admitted that his government have failed to defend the people who were killed, not because they have not tried, but because the “forces on the other side” are evil and have strong support. However, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu assured that evil will not reign forever and asked that the security structure in the country should be restructured.

In his words “We have failed to defend these people. Not because we have not tried, but because these forces on the other side are evil and they have supports. They will not triumph over us forever”.
