If Jesus was your Pastor Would He wear Face Mask in Church for fear of Covid-19

To be clear, this article is not an attempt to repudiate the effectiveness of face mask as a means to stop the spread of coronavirus. Rather it’s an attempt to shed some more light on the on-going debate about whether it is appropriate for government to compel churches and other worship houses to mandate their members to wear face mask.

Some pastors have come out to say that it impugns the integrity of the church as a refuge for healing and deliverance, adding that any pastor that agrees to the use of face mask in their churches has denied the power and efficacy of the word of God as heaven’s healing balm.

Rev. Chris Okotie, Senior Pastor, Household of God Church, was the first to sound the alarm. In a public message, he berated the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, for accepting to go with government on the guidelines for social distancing for churches.

Okotie condemned CAN’s proposed recommendations of distancing in the seating arrangement and wearing of face mask in churches as “blasphemous infidelity” and desecration of the Church of Jesus Christ. The leadership of Christ Embassy Church have also lambasted CAN for accepting the social distancing guidelinea.

Some other Christians have countered that argument saying that wearing face mask as demanded by government is in line with scriptural admonition because in Romans 13 Apostle clearly commands that Christians obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the purpose of order.

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” Romans 13: 1-6

But in the midst of all these confusion, there are people asking, what would Jesus do, if he were a pastor in this present circumstance? Would he obey the directive of government and wear a face mask in church. Or would he reject the directive because it violates divine principles and negates the identity of the church as a place of healing?

People Who Come Late To Church Should Pity Themselves - Pastor Paul Enenche Reveals Why

I won’t try to answer yes or no to the question of whether Jesus would have worn face mask, I will leave that to you. But here is my point. There is no doubt that in his 33 years on earth, Jesus was a law abiding citizen. He observed the Jewish laws and customs and didn’t default in his taxes (Matthew 17 vs 24-27).

One of the reasons that some Christians give for reheating face mask is that it is uncomfortable and inconvenient, but the whole revelation of Jesus was that he went out it his way to bring salvation to humans.

He left the splendor and glory of heaven to live uncomfortably on earth so that mankind can access salvation. That couldn’t have been comfortable or convenient for him. Jesus endured the considerably worse than uncomfortable death on the cross to break the power of sin and death and reconcile God and humanity.

Some other Christians have also rejected face mask because they don’t believe it is helpful. Well face mask have been scientifically proven to be helpful in preventing the spread of Covid 19. Now, even if you don’t believe it does, what about wearing it for the sake of those who believe it.

After all, the bible instructs those who are strong to take care for those who are weak, it also teaches us to voluntarily limit our freedoms for the sake of others. Jesus epitomized these principles all through his life on earth.

So when people see you without face mask, those who agree with you may think you are smart, but those who dint will see you as selfish, and not caring about their wellbeing.

So wearing a mask is not just about you. It is a way to show that you love your neighbor. And if you don’t believe in the safety of the masks and you wear one anyway — then that is an even more extraordinary witness of selfless love.

So what would Jesus do? I am pretty sure by now you can provide answer to that question.
