Reverend Fr. Oluoma Chineye John, a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, released a video clip on his official Facebook page some hours ago. In the video, while preaching to his congregation on the topic: “Blessed are the poor” point out that, If you want to go to heaven, be ready to be poor.
Fr. Oluoma asserted that anything Jesus does not corroborate, or his words or actions contradict is suppressed. He said that is the new testament view on wealth.
Fr. Oluoma read Matthew 5:3 as the anchored scripture for the message where Jesus says; “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for there is the kingdom of God”. He said people are ready to go to heaven and are not ready to be poor, yet asking God what they are to do? He asks his congregation if they do not believe in Jesus?
Reverend Oluoma perceived his congregation as wanting to get an explanation on this when he jokingly said there was no explanation. You either live poor on earth and go to heaven, or you live rich on earth and go to hell, no two ways about it.
He later candidly said; “there are some explanations to it but might not be an explanation that will interest you, is not like Jesus is praising poverty or making it a virtue and then wealth a vice. No! neither poverty nor wealth is a goal, an ambition or a target you should set for yourself in life”.
Listen to me, he said, “You don’t live your life pursuing either poverty or wealth, they are not goals or visions to pursue. So Jesus is not saying poverty is a virtue, you don’t live all your life doing anything and everything to be poor”. He lastly said poverty and riches are not goals, visions or purposes to pursue, most especially you don’t pursue wealth.
