In Various Attacks, Christians Are Beaten and Their Homes Are Destroyed

Multiple attacks on Christian communities result in physical violence and property destruction.

Morning Star News – NAIROBI, Kenya, October 4th, 2022 After a Muslim father of four in Uganda converted to Christianity, other Muslims in the area were angry and assaulted him and burned down his house. A week later, a 52-year-old convert in a nearby region was similarly attacked and left unable to walk, according to reports.

Musa Wabwire, 38, stated that on the evening of September 9 he was praying at his house in the Bulumba Sub-County of the Kaliro District when his family and other Muslims came to visit. Wabwire said that when the mosque’s imam saw he wasn’t there for Friday prayers, he sent an aide who covertly filmed footage of him listening to Christian radio.

Wabwire, who served as the mosque’s treasurer while secretly converting to Christianity, stated, “After hearing that, they all became upset and poured into my house and asked me numerous questions, which I failed to answer.” I urged them to take their treasury and leave me alone since my relationship with Christ was sufficient. They were so enraged that they began beating me up while chanting, “Kafir, Kafir [infidel]!”

He said that he was given 40 lashes with sticks for refusing to forsake Christ. Wabwire said that his elder brother, an imam in a neighbouring community, had ordered the demolition of his crops and his residence on the property.

Wabwire complained that his possessions were soaked since they were placed out in the rain. “My brothers have advised that I not be put to death, but that I should instead abandon the farm.”

Wabwire claimed he departed with several of his children who had returned after seeing their sick grandmother while his wife was away. Security concerns have led him and his family of five to seek safety in an unknown place.

MOTHER ATTACKED

Shadia Namuzungu was assaulted by Muslims in Bwikomba village, Kibuku District, on September 16, only two days after she converted to Christianity.

She added that on September 14 in Kituti village, the 52-year-old mother had gone to an evangelistic gathering.

Acute stomach problems for almost three years, Namuzungu told Morning Star News. Once someone prayed for me, the discomfort went away. I decided to make an appointment with the pastor when the conference was over.

From her hospital bed, Namuzungu stated, “He lead her to believe in Christ, and she departed with tremendous pleasure and serenity.” After she walked forward to pray during the evangelistic event, Kaire Jamada, the imam of her mosque, and other Muslims visited her on September 15 after seeing her do so.

She informed the mosque imam that she had experienced a miracle cure from Christ after a lengthy sickness, and that was why she had chosen to follow Him when he questioned her about receiving prayer from the pastor.

The imam “was left in bewilderment and went without speaking a word,” Namuzungu told Morning Star News. However, the next day he came back with five or six more Muslims. They (the four of them) proceeded to rip up my crops, slaughter my sheep, and dismantle my home.

She claims that two Muslim men attacked her with sticks before kicking and slapping her. After some of her neighbors came to check on her after hearing her screams, they departed.

A Christian next-door neighbor reported, “Shadia began to faint,” and he rushed her to the hospital. Her eyes were puffy and she had injuries all over her body, including her back, hands, stomach, and legs.

He continued, saying that she had been hospitalized for many days and was still unable to move.

The assaults were only the most recent example of what Morning Star News describes as a pervasive trend of persecution against Christians in Uganda.

Religious freedom, including the freedom to preach one’s faith and to change religions, is guaranteed by the constitution and other legislation in Uganda. There is a large Muslim community in the eastern part of Uganda, however they make up no more than 12 percent of the total population.
