Is it a sin for women to wear trousers? Read Apostle Joshua Selman’s answer to this question

This is one of the most controversial questions in Pentecostal circles today. Some believed that those who wear trousers are going straight to hell. Others argued that it wasn’t so. Many including myself have been affected in one way or the other by this argument.

This was always the story until I listened to a message on this topic by apostle Joshua Selman. This sermon gives a lot of insight into these long standing debate and proffers a solution. The highlight of the message makes up the content of this article. Follow me and let’s dive in.

The popular verse of the scripture used by many to back up the argument is found in the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 22, verse 5

Deuteronomy 22:5 The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

Before any argument can be made out of this verse it is important to understand what it is really saying, so that we don’t interpret it out of context. And that’s why it is important for every christian to get a good Bible concordance.

To understand properly what the verse really means, we will be examining some words in the verse.

The word “pertaineth” in the Hebrew is the word “Keliy” It means an article, vessel, implement, or a utensil.

The word “man” used in this verse is not the word “Adam” I hope you know that Adam means man. The word used is “iysh” in Hebrew. It means a soldier, a warrior or a man of war. It is good to understand the context because at this point Israel was always fighting.

If this verse were to be properly arranged, this is what it really means:

The woman shall not put on the weapons or the armor of a warrior, neither shall a warrior put on a woman’s garment, for all that do it is an abomination unto the Lord.

In the Jewish custom, it was an abomination for women to go for war. They were not allowed according to the Jewish priesthood. So in the verse above, Moses was just admonishing them. If you need a scriptural proof for why women don’t go for war in the old testament, this is it.

This verse explains why Beersheba, the wife of Uriah, was back at home when her husband was on the battlefield. David violated the principle because Kings do follow the people to go for war but he didn’t go. The worst kind of warfare is when you kill men, women and children. It is believed that whenever the men of a city is captured, the whole city is captured. That was why the women and children were made to go back when Gideon was to going to fight the midianites.

The verse was really saying that it was an abomination to God when the men became so irresponsible that women have to put on the robe of war. It never in any way mean that women shouldn’t put on trousers.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Galatians 5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

For God, it is not a matter of whether you wear trousers or not. It is matter of modesty and decency. To tell you the truth, the official Jewish dressing for men were even skirts. There are many parts of the world were men wore skirts. Remember the movies of Jesus like “Passion of Christ”, you will see that in that movie Jesus was wearing skirts.

It is not a matter of stopping people from wearing trousers. If you stop them from wearing trousers, the promiscuous ones will look for another way to show off their bodies. In Jesus days, there were harlots who don’t wear trousers but what they wore are usually very transparent.

There is a fruit of the spirit that the bible calls temperance or modesty. This is what God is asking from us. He wants us to be moderate not only in dressing but in all things. That is the central truth of this topic.
