Have you ever gone to a boutique and spent your hard earned money to buy a shirt you think is high quality because of the high price, and then you see a poor bus conductor, cleaner or trader wearing the same shirt? How do you feel when you encounter this situation? Do you stop wearing the shirt, or do you feel you wasted your money on something you could have gotten at a cheaper price somewhere else?
Joshua Bamiloye, son of Mount Zion Film’s founder Mike Bamiloye, has asked his followers whether it is prideful to stop wearing a shirt you have because you see a bus conductor or pepper seller wearing the shirt.
Nigerians began to react with some claiming that it was prideful because the person would have felt happy and confident if they saw the shirt on a highly placed individual.
Some others said it might not be pride because the person might just be sad seeing his “nice shirt” worn anyhow.
Some others claimed that the person might want to be unique and seeing the shirt on someone else would cause the person to stop wearing the shirt in order to preserve his uniqueness.
In my opinion, I believe the words of the first person who replied is apt. I don’t think anyone would be angry to see an important person wearing the nice shirt you bought. If you really understand the subtle nature of pride, you would be able to spot it in scenarios like this.
