Is Masturbation a sin in the Bible?

The Bible does not mention masturbation specifically. Some Christian denominations believe that any form of sexual pleasure outside of marriage is sinful, while others do not consider it a sin. However, the exact interpretation of the Bible can vary between different Christian traditions and individuals. Ultimately, it’s up to each person to interpret the Bible for themselves and determine their own beliefs about the morality of masturbation.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:3-6, it says, “It is God’s will for you to be holy, to avoid sexual immorality, and to learn to control your own body in a holy and honorable way, not in passionate lust like the pagan people who don’t know God.”

“A person who doesn’t have self-control is like a city with broken-down walls,” says Proverbs 25:28. But where does the Bible say that masturbation is a bad thing? Well, it doesn’t. In that situation, the only thing we can compare it to is sexual immorality and lust.

Before we move on, let’s break down these two ideas. Sexual sin is a bad thing. (1 Thessalonians 4:3, Ephesians 5, and Colossians 3:5) Lust is wrong. (1 Peter 4:3, Proverbs 6:25, Matthew 5:28). In books that explain sexual immorality more clearly, it’s clear who you should sleep with and who you shouldn’t (Leviticus 20: 10-21). God tells his people not to get close to animals (Leviticus 20:16). God tells men not to sleep with women when they are having their period (Leviticus 20:18). What is the one thing that all of these sexual acts have in common? The sin of lust, which is connected to masturbation.

Even though the Bible doesn’t talk directly about masturbation, the thing that most often leads to it and keeps it going is having lustful thoughts.

Jesus talks of lust (Matthew 5:27-30) In the past, lust was thought to be any strong desire or craving, good or bad. Lust is a strong desire that can’t be stopped, which is basically what happens when people choose to masturbate. Most of the time, a person masturbates when they are thinking sexual thoughts about someone who is not their partner. Sin is what 1 John 2:16 calls “the lust of the flesh.” Sin is the only cause of masturbation.
