Isn’t it funny that the crude african culture values wives showing respect to their husband, but doesn’t really place on the same scale husbands showing respects to their wives? We’ve heard it said that respect is reciprocal, which means that if you want me to respect you, then you have to respect me. If the husband wants his wife to show him respect, he should also show his wife some respect.
Faith Oyedepo, while speaking to husbands, said that the wife needs some level of respect from her husband. She said that the tone and manner the husband speaks to his wife, shows the level of respect he has for her.
Why do you think the typical african culture values wives showing respect to their husbands, above husbands showing respect to their wives? You can share what you think the issue is, but I believe that the whole mindset of Africans is the culprit. One of the major causes of africans having this mindset, is the bride price culture.
I am not against the culture of the husband paying a dowry to show his seriousness (in fact, the Bible supports it), but then again, the way it is done in Africa makes the woman seem like a property that the husband buys. That way, the man can expect to receive respect from his wife, but would not want to give any respect because he believes that he owns the woman because he “bought” her by paying her bride price.
There should be a way to express our unique culture, without ruining marriages. Let it be known that although the man pays a dowry, the woman is not a property, but an object for him to pour out his love upon. After all, the Bible commands all husbands to love their wives the same way Christ loved the church, and gave himself for it. Do you agree with me?
