The Kogi state Deputy Governor Edward Onoja has this morning narrated how he accepted Jesus under the annoiting Bishop David Oyedepo in 1998.
Below are his words
I remember clearly that I accepted Christ’s finished work of redemption on Monday 9th November, 1998 when I gave my life to Christ. That was under the ministry of Bishop David Oyedepo at Winners Chapel, Raji Oba Street, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos.
The Bible said that Mary treasured up the prophetic words about her unborn baby in her heart and didn’t tell anyone about them. I believe she took that wise step for reasons of faith and to protect them from dream killers. Similarly, I will skip specific words of Prophecy which Bishop Oyedepo made on November 10th,1998 about 24 hours after I accepted Christ. They are still for an appointed time.
Incidentally, that end of year program in 1998 was the last before he moved to the Church’s permanent site at Canaan Land at Sango Otta in Ogun State, so work was moving very fast to finish the edifice, which upon completion entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest church auditorium in the world.
I was privileged to be part of a volunteer corps of labourers who took part in the construction. In those days you sacrifice, You pay your transport to the site to join in mixing cement, carrying blocks, cements, rods, and other building materials. It was hard but happy work for me, a true labour of love.
Although in recent times, I am not able to agree with much of the Bishop’s political commentaries, he is no doubt a great man of God, an undisputed father of the faith in Nigeria, and highly respected by me.
When I returned back to Jos where I was rounding up my degree program, I determined to make my newfound relationship with Christ as deep and authentic as possible and not to remain a nominal Christian. I gave myself to prayers and voracious consumption of God’s word.
I found a lot of encouragement in my friend Grant Onuoha from Isuikwuato LGA in Abia State. We met as classmates at Federal Government College, Kwali, Abuja nearly a decade earlier and bonded. My Admission number was 293 and his was 312. Just 19 persons apart. God also brought us together to study in the same faculty at the University of Jos. While I read Geology and Mining, he studied Geography & Planning.
We grew together in spiritual matters. He encouraged me to buy books to develop my understanding of things of the Spirit. 4 books by Pa Kenneth Erwin Hagin were particularly helpful. Bible Faith Study Course, Bible Healing Study Course, Bible Prayer Study Course, and The Holy Spirit and His Gifts. Anyone who has been part of the evangelical or pentecostal scene at any time between the 70s and now will be familiar with Pa Hagin. An American preacher who is considered a pioneer of the Word of Faith movement, his works were basically a staple of believers at the time.
My study of the Bible and Christian books helped to propel me from milk to strong meat level in the Faith.
These materials are 21 years old in my Library and I really recommend them for new converts. Salvation and growth as a believer is not dependent on your Pastor or anyone with titles in the church. It is an individual journey with your God. In the end, every mortal will stand before the judgement seat of Christ and give account of his own stewardship.
To this day, I have a set of scriptures that push me to make God my ultimate pursuit. They are:
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15.
“Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12.
Since spiritual things are spiritually discerned, I will suggest that anyone who has not undertaken an in-depth study of the scriptures and books on the subject should make an attempt to do so if they intend to discuss on the mystery of SARS-COV2. In addition, I will also recommend immersing yourself in the Left Behind Book Series by Tim Lahaye & Jerry B, Jenkins.
