Meet the Catholic priest who visited the Fulani Herdsmen on Sallah Day to eat and spend time with them

I saw the photos and story of this man online a few hours ago, and was immediately struck by his story. A few days ago was the Sallah celebration, a special day on the Islamic calendar set aside to commemorate the selflessness and sacrifice of Ibrahim in his act of obedience to Allah. It is a special holiday for all Muslim faithful to celebrate the sacrifice that is inherent in worship.

On such days, Muslims make ram sacrifice, organize social gatherings, and share food with their friends and loved ones. They exchange gifts, and make themselves happy. And a few days ago on Sallah day, this Catholic priest did something noteworthy, he visited a group of Fulani herdsmen in their dwelling, and spent time with them. The herdsmen welcomed him warmly and gave him food and drink. They ate and drank together, and held some discussions. The priest spent the whole day there with them, and at the end of the day, they took photos together.

From the photos, you can see the laughter on the faces of the Fulani herdsmen and the priest, and the comfortable way that the priest ate the food that they offered him. There was no show of fear or misunderstanding.

There is something interesting that resonates with me when I saw these photos. Because this show of love and understanding is taking place in a country where we have come to believe that we cannot find a common ground as far as our religious differences are concerned. This is a good sign, it therefore means that there good people in Nigeria, people who translate the love of God into the love of their fellow men. Because you cannot say you love God if you don’t love your fellow men.

As we all know, for long years now, religious conflict has been the order of the day in Nigeria, and it has led to a loud awakening of social hatred and violence, and lack of peaceful coexistence. And many analysts have traced the ethno-religious conflict to corruption. And that has pushed the country to the level of poverty and injustice.

Religious conflict has robbed the country of its identity, and has further extended it to conflicts control of power several other things. It has put a clog in the wheel of our progress, and led to complexities that a modern country like Nigeria should not be having.

We all need to learn from these men – this priest and the Fulani herdsmen. We need to understand that love is the integral message of every religion. We need to learn to open our arms to those people whom we label as infidels, just because they are not members of our religion.

This priest did what many people would never do. Because many of us attach so much sentiment to our faith that we fail to practice the core tenements of that faith. We need to put an end to religious segregation, and understand that we all are one despite our religious differences.

Nigeria is already laced with deep divisions which have been triggered by ethno-religious conflicts, and we might never be able to progress as a country if we do not learn to resolve those religious differences.

We should all learn from this Catholic priest and these Fulani herdsmen. If they could do it, we all can do it too. An end can be put to the strife and social hatred that permeates our society if we all can learn from this.

Below are photos of the Catholic priest and the Fulani herdsmen eating and spending time together:
