Pastor of Memphis Church Dies When His Car Hits a Tree
One week after the baptism of his youngest daughter, a pastor from Memphis was murdered in an automobile accident.
The Rev. Willie Boyd Jr., pastor of the Greenwood CME Church, was reportedly travelling alone on Saturday evening when his automobile crashed into a tree. The Shelby County Fire Department arrived and confirmed Boyd’s death at the site.
We still don’t know what caused the accident.
Bishop Emeritus Henry Williamson Sr. of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church remarked, “We miss him like a son or a brother,” as reported by Commercial Appeal.
The bishop said, “That’s how people thought of him.” “someone who is either a son or a brother. There is no one else like him.”
The late pastor was “modest, extremely devoted and dedicated to his ministry and his family,” as recalled by the bishop of the CME, the Rev. Marvin Frank Thomas Sr.
A prominent figure in his faith, Rev. Boyd was praised for his “excellent leadership,” “extremely involved in community and compassion for people,” “strong love of the gospel,” “wonderful speaker,” and “amazing vocalist.”
Tyrone Davis, an assistant pastor, said he was “devastated” by the news of the death.
“He was really gregarious and so compassionate and so concerned about the church, the town, his job, and his family,” Davis said of Boyd. “He was like a black hole,” the speaker said.
He also assured everyone that the church would take care of Boyd and his newly christened 1-year-old daughter.
Davis: “We want to encircle her with our arms of safety and let her know she’s not alone.” That “she is loved, she is cared for and beyond the days that are coming to know that this family is still her family”
Memphis Shelby County Schools Interim Superintendent Toni Williams also commented on Boyd’s death.
“Our MSCS family extends our deepest condolences to Pastor Boyd Jr.’s loved ones, the congregation at Greenwood CME Church, and everyone of Greenwood. Our MSCS kids and their families from underrepresented groups have the support of Pastor Boyd “With a tweet, she spoke with others.
Boyd leaves behind a wife and three children, Ebony and the children Boyd and his first wife had together.
