My Choir Director is wicked (Message For Choirs)

MY CHOIR DIRECTOR IS WICKED

If your Choir director truly loves you, he/she will drill you, stretch you and jack you off your comfort zone. Working with a choir director who loves you will never be easy. They will many times drain you. Many times you’ll hate them because they will look mean and wicked. Calling out greatness out of someone in the midst of the mediocrity around is never easy especially in our environment.

If you have a choir director who always pampers you and rubs your head and allows you do whatever you want, you’re not lucky. You won’t know now until 25 years after and it will be too late. Many of the excellent singers and musicians we have today can trace their skill set and musical dopeness to one time in their music journey when they served under a seemingly tough MD or Choir Director. Directors who won’t accept anything below what the original song sounds like, directors who will insist you arrive early at rehearsals and while at rehearsal no side talks, no eating and playing.

Directors who will bring tasking and demanding songs that will stretch everyone, songs that you’ll stay up all night to score. Directors who won’t end rehearsal until the choir gets it right. Directors who will keep training you and won’t use you until you’re fully formed. Many of us don’t want such a leader. We want to improve musically but we want a noodle like MD that will not bring any tough song. One that will change the key or even change the song because you’re not getting it.

Trainings are tough. They are never easy, either spiritual or technical trainings. The reason is because those activities are driving against your flesh and your comfort. Naturally we love a song that even before you put your earpiece in 5 minutes you’ve learnt it. It has just 3 chords and one verse. But to really grow in depth in music you’ll need more.

(must read) SIT BEFORE YOU STAND

Perhaps your choir director is not wicked. They just love you too much to allow such potential waste. Perhaps your music director doesn’t deliberately want life to be difficult. He or she just knows that global excellence is possible in your choir and that you can do more and they won’t rest till you reach that potential.

This is why they call for more rehearsals and more intensity and concentration in the rehearsal. This informs the song choice and many other things. You left that church and moved to a church with a cooler MD. You may now he cruising and thinking music is not meant to he difficult but I give you 2 years you’ll see that you’re rusting and delivering below your capacity.
