Nigerian Clergyman faces trial for allegedly pouring salt inside neighbour’s generator

A cleric, Francis Omofoye, has denied an allegation by his neighbour, Adeyeye Jesutoki that he (Omofoye), poured salt into the fuel tank of his power generating set at night.

The accused person was arraigned before a Magistrate’s court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital for allegedly giving false information to the police.

He alleged that the suspect came into his compound at Number 12, Dejo Kolawole Close, Ota-Efun, Osogbo and sprayed salt on his Thermocool power generating set on October 29, 2021 at about 7pm.

The police accused Jesutoki of giving false information to the police at the Oke-Odo Divisional Police Headquarters with a view to ridiculing and injuring the reputation of Omofoye contrary to and punishable under sections 125A, 379(2) and 249(D) of the Criminal Code, Cap, 34 Volume II, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The 64-year-old defendant, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was released on bail by the court.

When the trial began recently, the complainant, being led in evidence by the police prosecutor, Inspector Bose Shoyemi, said that he was at a Seminary school at Odi-Olowo area of Osogbo, for classes when the incident happened.

Omofoye said that he was nowhere close to his neighbour’s house at the time of the incident, alleging that “The Police later visited the Seminary school and saw the register that I signed on that day.

“After the IPO visited the Seminary school where I was on that day, he saw a copy of the register that I signed and the time. When we returned to the station, the DPO told Mr. Jesutoki to bring an expert to check the generator.

“The generator expert was brought to the police station and he checked it but didn’t see anything that appeared like salt in the fuel tank. So, I am innocent. My neighbour just wanted to tarnish my reputation and that was why I reported him to the police.”

The magistrate, A. A. Adebayo adjourned the matter till March 31 for further hearing.
