popularly Nigerian Singer Adekunle Gold has taken to social media to discuss his struggle with the dreaded sickle cell anemia.
This came as a shock to the unsuspecting fans as the singer openly lamented what he’s been passing through all the while, so as to encourage those who are currently in his shoes never to give up. He also narrated his family’s poor background and how it all affected his childhood. Certainly his story can inspire the feeling of belonging and acceptance in the minds of millions of his fans.
In his words, ” It feels liberating to finally be able to share this part of my life with you, to finally be able to speak my truth. When I talk about how I struggled to get to where I am today, I need you to know that my struggle was real. I was born with sickle cell disease. It was life and death, it was physical, mental, financial, you name it and I went through it all. It was tough, painful and frustrating.
I lived with a sickness no one around me understood, I lived with restrictions all my childhood. “

But even while his parents could not afford to pay all the bills, he was appreciative of the fact that atleast his mother took him to church regularly for prayers. The singer also narrated one of the most intense tragic moments of his childhood, when he asked God to take his life at just 20 .
” I begged God to take my life because I couldn’t understand what I did to deserve the pain my body and mind was under, ” he said. “As usual with sickle cell crisis, after the pain subsided, God asked me , ‘ that end you begged for, do you still want it? ‘ Ofcourse I said ‘ no ‘ and that was when everything changed for me.
