Notable Men of God Who Made Comments About Dressing And Dancing Styles In Church

Dressing and dancing styles in church has for quite a long time now, been a very controversial issue. As it seems, the Christian world is often polarised into two dissenting opinions especially when questions regarding these behaviours in church are raised.

Usually, while some people contend that the church is a sacred place and thus, people coming into it must dress and act presentablly; some other persons however argue that God searches the heart and does not really care about ones appearance.

Moreso, the response to these questions about how one should dress to or dance in church; by popular men of God in Nigeria still somewhat appear differently. Notwithstanding, they all condemn sinful desires connected with these actions. Below is a short list of popular Nigerian Pastors and what they have to say about this controversial topic.

Notable Men of God Who Made Comments About Dressing And Dancing Styles In Church

1. Pastor WF Kumuyi

William Kumuyi is the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry in Nigeria. Just recently, the cleric expressed his worldview on the proper dress code and dance styles in church although using the choir of his church as an example.

The popular pastor had said thus in a viral video:

“If you’re Deeper Life choir; when you come to sing at the crusade, don’t bring that worldly dancing into the crusade where Deeper Life is organising.

And then, don’t bring all that kind of dress that I saw last night, a woman shall not put on that which belongs to an man. When you wear a jacket that I’m wearing now, that belongs to a man”.

2. Pastor EA Adeboye

Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Reedemed Christian Church of God has a somewhat similar view to Kumuyi. In fact, according to reports, Pastor Adeboye had in 2010, banned the wearing of mini skirts and trousers by ladies as well as gold trinkets or bleached hair in his church.

More so, in 2020, the popular pastor while speaking on worldly trends had expressed his shameful amazement on what was going on among Christians. He was copied saying:

“It amazes me when I see Christians trying to copy the world. It is even more shameful when we see Church leaders following worldly trends. The world is now dictating how we dress, sing and dance in the Church. It appears that a lot of people in the Church no longer follow Christ but the world”.

3. Pastor Mike Bamiloye

The founder and president of Mount Zion Drama Ministry and Mount Zion Television, Mike Bamiloye is another pastor whose comment on dressing and dancing in church got the attention of many persons. Seemingly, the popular pastor had over 2 years ago, shared a post on his Facebook page, calling those who dress and dance seductively (worldly) in church hired assassins.

4. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome

Pastor Chris represents a minority of pastors who allow his congregation to judge their appearances themselves. As it seems, there might not even be any dress code or dancing style disallowed by the Christ Embassy except those against natural law.

Although, the popular pastor does not openly tell his members to wear whatever they like to church, he doesn’t openly criticise it too. Notwithstanding, he has at some time, said or done something relating to this this topic. Like in 2017, a video of him dancing the then reigning ‘shaku shaku’ at a member’s white wedding flooded social media and received quite a lot of mixed reactions.

However, Pastor Chris in a crusade had once differentiated between dancing to God and dancing to men, while shedding more light on what perfect praise means. He opined thus:

“You can dance to men in celebrating them; you can applaud then but you can’t applaud God”.
