Salt and Light

Matthew 5:13-16; Ye are the salt of the earth but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

What is salt?
Salt is essential to human life and saltiness is one of the basic human tastes. It is a purgative and it is also an element that gives liveliness and piquancy. It is a white crystalline substance used for seasoning or preserving food. It is essential to the health of both people and animals. Some major things to note about salt are: it’s purity and ability to preserve.

What is light?
According to Merriam Webster and Collins dictionary, “Light is the brightness that let you see things. Light comes from sources such as the sun, moon, lamps, and fire. It is something that makes vision possible. Some things to note about light are its intensity, ability to give directions and polarization.

Who is a Salt and Light?
Every believer who has accepted Jesus as their Lord and saviour is a salt and a light.
Salt as stated above is used to preserve, this means that we are called to preserve, and add flavour to systems and culture around us. While as lights we are meant to illuminate, give direction, shine and dissipate darkness. Task made simple, every Christian is called to be salt on earth and also a light to our world.
The level of the decadence and decline in values, compromise and filth in our world has infiltrated several systems in the society and this has made things unbearable. God seeing this chaos and discrepancy in the world equips us as believers to shine forth as light and to preserve Kingdom values.
Note: You cannot shine without knowing God (John 15 ).

Functions of light and salt
We are called to preserve Kingdom values such as holiness, love, self-control, purity humility, and diligence wherever we are found. The level of atrocity carried out in the society is unimaginable and the rise in immorality, falsehood ignorance, pride arrogance and death is alarming. Hitherto, God sends us to preserve ordinances and cultures of the kingdom in diverse systems we find ourselves. Daniel and the Hebrew boys are true examples of Light and Salt in a godless nation like Babylon.
Truth be told, the level of darkness in the world is gross and it has made it seemingly impossible for men to see correctly. The days are getting darker, several wicked acts are committed freely in different strata of the society ranging from fraud, theft, indecency, blackmail and immorality To this dark and unbearable situation, God has sent us as a light to cure and correct the ignorance of men by proffering solutions and leading them to Christ hereby showing the God-kind of life in that environment.
As salt and light, we are to give hope to generations that have lost hope, a society where no one can be trusted, we can stand as covers and voices.
We have been called to raise the banner of Christ and advance the kingdom in every sector. Luckily, we don’t have to be Pastors, Apostles, Evangelists and Missionaries or occupy any of the five-fold offices. We can be teachers, lawyers, bakers, designers, parents, or workers and still shine the light. Several platforms have been created for us to shine the light. Wherever you see darkness, ignorance, compromise, shine! Defend the God-kind of life, heal the sick, raise the dead, share the knowledge of Christ, stand for the oppressed, set the captives free, raise the dead, stand for the truth, and be bold about your convictions.
We have been wired to shine forth as the light of the world not the light of the church so wherever we are found, be it in government, fashion homes, family, religious groups, financial sector, or media we must make sure that we consciously and intentionally shine the light. We are cities set on a hill, never cower in the darkness, stop giving excuses, just like Esther said “if I perish, I perish” and she never perished, you can take that mountain for Christ, you can be that voice that men need to hear.
Deliberately chose to be a voice by being a light, a catalyst and an ensign. It begins with you consciously yielding daily to stand as a light in this crooked generation.

Sin: It is a major pollutant that contaminates your being and weakens your effect
Fear: Several people are afraid of standing out because of what others will say
Doubt and confusion: Doubting what God has said has hindered several people from shining.
Our association: As salt and light we must be very careful of the people we move with, our association can make or mar us.
Ignorance: It’s quite pathetic that most people have zero or little knowledge about their identity in Christ and this has prevented their shinning.
