Sammie Okposo

How did you meet your wife?

I met her at a concert I went to in London at Kings Way International Church. I was invited as a guest musician for the programme and my wife came with her sister who attends KICC.

What attracted you to her?

I was at a point where I had made up my mind that it was time to marry. I was like whenever I meet her, I’ll know she’s the one because things would flow naturally. After speaking with her for a few minutes, I just felt peace.

How long did you date?

We dated for about two and a half years.

Did you encounter any challenges while dating?

She was concerned about my work; she wanted to be sure that she was not going to be caught up in the craziness of my work. She was going to support me hundred per cent to do what I wanted to do. But she wanted our home to be our home and not an extension of the entertainment industry. Since she was not living in Nigeria, I had to do a lot of travelling back and forth and as God would have it, I was got many bookings in London around the time so I really didn’t have to spend my own money to buy tickets.

Did you go on bended knees when you proposed to her?

I didn’t go on bended knees. I didn’t go the traditional way because, studying my wife, I know who she is. I didn’t think that would have been an ideal proposal for her because it’s something everybody does.

What stood out on your wedding day?

We will be 10 years on July 1 this year. I was getting ready for the wedding in my hotel when I got a call from Richard Mofe-Damijo. He called to ask, “Where are you? I said I was getting ready to come and he said, “His Excellency and the First Lady are here.” I was like how would they get to the wedding venue before me.

My wedding was scheduled for 3pm but they were already at the venue by 2:30 and the hotel I stayed was about 10 minutes’ away. I called all the groom’s men to say that I couldn’t be in the hotel and my governor and the first lady would be waiting at the venue. I rushed to the venue and the wedding started. Everything went well.

Did you have challenges combining marriage and work?

No not at all. My wife used to live in the UK, I’m the one that married her and brought her to Nigeria so she is exposed and used to work in an entertainment outfit in the UK. She understands what I do and able to handle it and allow me do my work.
