While responding to a social media user on whether Yul Edochie can still be regarded as a Christian after taking a second wife, a former aide to Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has said that the modern marriage vows we use in Black Africa are a curse and that it is not scriptural.
He said the marriage vows were copied from Europe and that monogamy is a “western construct”, not a Christian one. He said it’s the reason Black Africans have started accepting same-sex marriage but are not supportive of polygamy. He added that he won’t advise anyone to marry more than one wife, but it’s better to be polygamous than adulterous.
“The modern marriage vows we use in Black Africa is a curse, it is not scriptural. Monogamy is a Western construct, not a Christian one. It was adopted from Europe. Sadly, Black Africans have accepted this Western construct as a Christian one, which is why we are becoming tolerant of same-sex marriage, and are very intolerant of polygamy. Meanwhile, you find polygamy in the scripture – Exodus 21:10, and the thought of the other abominable according to Leviticus 18:22. I will not counsel anyone to marry more than one wife, but I will say polygamy is better than adultery and fornication”, he said.
