STORY: THE QUEST (Ep 1&2)

THE QUEST ( The Voice You Listen To)

Episode 1
Growing up wasn’t rosy, the challenges were tough, especially growing up outside home. Yome had to leave home after the death of her younger brother, because her mother couldn’t stand the trauma of loosing a son she begot at old age. She blamed Yome for his death, as only both of them were at home and she returned from the market and found the only son dead.
“WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY SON?”, Mummy Yome cried out of pains and sorrow. The seven years old girl couldn’t fathom what the whole drama was about, as she held her brother and was asleep when her mothers voice woke her, with a hot slap on her cheek.

She only saw her mother wailing uncontrollably, while neighbors trooped in, to find out what happened.
“This WITCH has killed my son!!! First, I didn’t get married early due to a scar on my face caused by my grandma. Childbearing became another battle I had to face, only for me to give birth to a worthless female….. Oh, what kind of misfortune is this? She hit herself on the floor and grabbed Yome, trying to strangle her.

“Do you want to kill your only child? You just lost one, do you want to loose another?”, an elderly woman shouted and dragged Yome from her mother’s grip.

“LET HER DIE….I don’t need her in my life. I was told to name her after my wicked Grandma that gave me this dreadful scar on my face”, she cried pointing the scar that covered the left side of her face.
“Oh, my life is finished. Why didn’t she die? Why did it have to be my son? The Prophet believed that she would give birth to a Mighty Man of Valor that would destroy the kingdom of darkness and make this family famous. He named her, and blessed her when I was only six weeks pregnant with her”, she looked at Yome with disgust and spat on the ground.

The women shook their heads in pity. They looked at the innocent child, who was also crying while looking at her mother and brother. They consoled both, and waited for the man of the house to return.

Mr. Efeturi, Yome’s father was grieved by the accident. He affirmed that the child had been sick for three months and they were told he may likely not survive it. He consoled his wife and buried their son. But after the burial, his wife refused to set her eyes on Yome, let alone sleep in the same house with her. She said she had lost her child and had no need of a Worthless Witch. To avoid the death of either his wife or his daughter, Yome had to be sent out of her parents house.

THE QUEST ( The Voice You Listen To)

Episode 2
Two days after the burial of his son and having his daughter sleep and feed in his neighbor’s house, Mr. Efeturi had to take Yome to his mother in the village. She cried bitterly but he promised to visit her often and buy her whatever she needed, but she just couldn’t stay with them anymore. That was how the Quest of growing up in the village started.

Yome attended a public school and was very brilliant. At the end of every term, she was served Jollof rice, as her reward for being outstanding. She would run home to her grandmother, with the food and the result; but the old woman will always reply her: “Yome, give me the food oh, you fit keep the paper wait for your Papa but I need the food. You stay in my house, so the food is my reward” the old woman was usually happier than the girl who excelled.

The first time she menstruated was after her thirteenth Birthday. Her grandmother advised her to avoid men, because she is a fertile ground 😁. The little angel didn’t understand. All she knew was that, her grandmother was serious about her not going close to any guy, and would chase any guy that dared to come to the house to look for her.

The story changed when Yoma came back to the village. Yome was in SS3 then and was preparing for her WAEC. She hadn’t seen her mother since she was brought to the village and her father only visited once in three months to give them money and foodstuffs. Her only encourager was her grandmother and only friend was Efetobore, who she fondly called Efe. Though Efe was prettier than Yome, it was Yome who attracted guys because she was very brilliant and knew how to speak Oyibo 😁

Yoma was the most educated guy in the village, and loved to intimidate others with his “big Grammer”. He came to celebrate Christmas in the village that fateful year, when their path crossed.
