Bishop Wisdom Irabor, the Presiding Bishop Of Answers Assembly in a recent post on Facebook, spoke about ‘Mentorship In Ministry – The Gospel According To Carnality. In the Bible, we have the gospel according to John; the gospel according to Luke; the gospel according to Matthew, so also in contemporary times, we have the gospel according to men called by God.
According to him, young and immature pastors behind the pulpits every week are turning the gospel into a display of materialism and showmanship but now it is the gospel of carnality. In a sermon that is to prepare people for ministry and heaven, you hear statements like, “This wristwatch I bought it in Dubai for 10,000 dollars; The shoe I am wearing now is 650,000 naira; The shoes I have can build a complete house; I bought this necklace for 3000 dollars just last week.”
He then explained that this is why young men without any call to be a pastor, are jumping into ministry just to be like you. And by the time they come in and after some times they are not looking like you, enjoying like you, they conclude that your blessings are a product of your position as a General overseer. And if they don’t start their church they may never be like you in this life, so they pull out just to go and enjoy the life you alone want to enjoy.
“So you can see that from the time they met you, you program them for life on earth and not for eternity mindset and consciousness,” he continued. So you see a young pastor calling for offering to buy a new drum set in the church, yet he is having three cars packed outside the church. One for him, one for his wife, and one for the kids. He will never sow any of those cars as a seed to buy that drum set because he was raised with the gospel according to carnality.
Finally, he said that it is good to look good for the constituency you represent, but never make it a sermon. Otherwise, it will stir an unholy drive for materialism in the heart of young men who should be burning for good but are now doing all kinds of things to reflect the gospel according to carnality.
