Turning Challenges Into Opportunity

Techniques for Transforming Challenges into Opportunity

When we least expect it, life takes a turn we never would have expected. Because I used to work in corporate accounting before switching careers to become a homeschool parent, then a missionary, and now a writer, I feel I can provide some insight on the topic. That’s only the tip of the iceberg of my best points.

It was my life’s numerous bumps on the road that led to some of my most rewarding successes. I got married and had to relocate throughout my college years. Sadly, the university in my new city did not offer the program I had already begun. Because of that dilemma, I decided to study accounting in college. Once again, I was forced by financial need to choose a position where I was able to progress my career by taking advantage of opportunities to learn new skills.

That happened to me before I realized that “God allows everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his plan for them” (Romans 8:28 NLT). With some experience under my belt, I’ve come to believe that the trials and tribulations God permitted in my life were really opportunities waiting to be taken advantage of.

Our Issues

Issues flood in from every side. Life isn’t always convenient; sometimes things like a flooded basement or a vehicle breakdown or the loss of a loved one are simply inevitable. Sometimes the issue is the result of someone else’s actions, such as when your job is terminated due to poor management, you become the victim of a crime, or your spouse decides to leave you. God creates blessings out of these messes.

Do you, however, ever ponder if God’s chances include our own self-made crises? For the record, my answer is “Yes!” God seems very present in my life during these difficult moments. God addresses His cherished but erring Israelite people via the prophet Hosea.

But eventually, I shall succeed in regaining her affection. I want to take her into the desert and have a heartfelt conversation with her there. I will give her back her grapes and convert the Valley of Trouble into a doorway to a brighter future. Hoshea 2:14–15a New Living Translation

What an amazing thing God promised them who had mocked Him. They rejected His sovereignty and began paying homage to idols instead. However, God’s compassion is limitless. God builds a “portal of hope” in the “Valley of Trouble” for His disobedient people, including you and me. To be in a “valley of difficulty” suggests that one’s difficulties were overwhelming. Worse, they had only themselves to blame for their issues with God. Nonetheless, He had a strategy to transform their difficulties into uplifting chances.

The Issue with Queen Esther

Let’s learn from the example of someone else whose tale God put in the Bible to show us how to convert adversity into opportunity.

The issue that Queen Esther faced was far bigger than her sphere of power. She was a Jew who went by a Persian name and found out that her Persian-sounding husband had signed a proclamation to expel all Jews from the kingdom, including her. Esther’s uncle Mordecai, troubled by the ruling, beseeched her to speak with the king.

Exactly what is the issue? No one, not even the queen, was permitted to get near the monarch unless specifically summoned. It was possible that the Jews might be wiped out if they waited for a summons, but entering the palace prematurely meant definite death for Esther. For the love of God, what is a queen to do?

Let’s go over the six steps Esther used to transform challenges into possibilities.

First, you must grasp the whole extent of the issue.
The queen called for her attendant, one of the king’s eunuchs named Hathach. She gave him strict orders to see Mordecai and discover the cause of his grief. Hathach then left the palace and found Mordecai on the plaza outside the main entrance. Mordecai filled him in on everything that had happened, down to how much Haman had pledged to put into the royal treasury in exchange for the annihilation of the Jews. Hathach received a copy of the edict made in Susa ordering the destruction of the Jewish people from Mordecai. He requested that Hathach present it to Esther and provide an explanation. In addition, he requested that Hathach advise her to appeal to the monarch for compassion and aid on behalf of her people. According to the Bible (Esther 4:1-8)

Sometimes we just want to run away and hide ourselves in the first sand dune because facing the situation makes us feel sick. However, the winds eventually carry the grains away, and when we glance up, the situation has just worsened.

Wouldn’t it be better to understand the issue at hand rather than try to ignore it? It might turn out to be better than you expect. Esther, who preferred to remain on the sidelines, nonetheless sent a servant to inquire with her uncle. He collected the facts and presented them to Esther, the queen. Now that she had all the information, she could figure out what to do.

Esther did not try to downplay the gravity of the situation. She finally acknowledged the horrific truth of the genocidal plot. Likewise, we must not minimize the gravity of our predicament. We also don’t have to resort to sweetening spiritual cliches. When it comes to solving problems, the God we worship is far bigger. If we minimize the difficulty we face, we minimize the might of our God.

Keep in mind who God is.
Esther had second thoughts after considering the data her servant had obtained from Mordecai. She worried about the consequences of going to the king without a formal invitation, so she informed Mordecai of her apprehension. A rapid reply from him reminded her of Esther 4:14, when he said, “If you stay silent at a time like this, rescue and relief for the Jews will spring from some other location, but you and your kin will perish.”

Because of his familiarity with God, Mordecai had faith that He would save him from certain death. Similarly, he was persuaded that Esther should put herself in harm’s way to be a part of the solution. The fact that he instructed her did not mean he did not care about her well-being. Instead, he cared deeply for his niece. This is why he prayed for her safety and left everything in God’s hands.

Mordecai’s faith was founded on his recollection of God’s promises and unfailing love for the Jewish people throughout the ages. God showed Himself to be faithful to Mordecai, and He will show Himself to be faithful to you, too, if you put your trust in Him and allow Him to transform your challenges into opportunities.

Be grateful for God’s calling on your life, and act accordingly.
In order to assist Esther get over her fear, Mordecai points her toward God. In the end, he poses a question after making some observations on God’s nature in Esther 4:14 (NLT). Who knows, maybe you were crowned queen for this very reason.

Today is the day God has been preparing you for. He has arranged everything perfectly for the present moment. If God offers you a challenge, it’s because He wants to see you reflect His majesty and holiness. Your fate will be decided today.

Make a plan a top priority.
When Esther finally accepted her role in life, she was able to make preparations. Topping the charts, at the top of the charts? Make your way to God.

Without God’s help, Esther was hesitant to take any more action, much less one as risky as addressing the king.

So Esther wrote back to Mordecai, “Go and collect together all the Jews of Susa and fast for me. Hold off on food and drink for three days straight. All of my helpers and I will follow suit. This is from (Esther) 4:15-16a New Living Translation.

Esther and the other Jews in town banded together to fast and pray to God for deliverance and sustenance. Esther didn’t use prayer as a diversionary strategy. Her faith in God strengthened her for the fight. God gave her the strength she needed via prayer. As she prayed, God revealed a way out of her predicament.

Be courageous.
And then, I’ll break the law and meet the king anyhow. If death is my fate, then so be it.” To paraphrase (Esther 4:16b NLT)

It may seem like Esther is accepting of her fate when, in fact, she had just finished a prayer session in which she strengthened her faith in God. God, she realized, had always been in charge of her life.

Fear dissipates as we internalize this fact. It’s easy to follow His orders because we know He can make good out of any bad situation.

Consequence-taking.
Esther’s dramatic journey through God’s destiny for her is detailed in the subsequent chapters of the book. You should read it again and over again. Warning: the following contains spoilers. King Ahasuerus grants Esther his favor, Esther survives and thrives, God prevents the genocide, Haman meets his end, and Mordecai rises to high office in the court. God used this apparently insurmountable obstacle to open up a number of doors of opportunity.

God doesn’t create generic happily-ever-afters. It’s possible that the solution that worked for Esther won’t work for you. It’s possible that certain aspects of your experience may remain challenging. But know that God will deliver a wonderful chance to you via your trouble, as He has promised. Try to anticipate its appearance.

God’s Power Is Best Displayed in Our Deficiencies

To start, I shared a few personal experiences where challenges ultimately led to beneficial outcomes. When I was younger, I had no idea who held such power. I had an irrational fear that I was the one who was really in charge. That’s the worst mistake I could have made.

The phrase “things work together for good” is not something we can force. What good might come from the worst sins or natural calamities that humanity has ever experienced? God alone, via His Son Jesus, has such salvific authority.

Let us, like the Apostle Paul, who boasted of God’s work amid his many trials, recognize who holds the reins and act accordingly. Now I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s strength may rest upon me. According to the New Living Translation, 2 Corinthians 12:9.

Will you take what we discover about God through Esther’s story and use it to solve the issue you’re facing right now? Your hand is on the doorknob of opportunity, and God is waiting to be trusted and obedient before He opens it.
