Why Jesus Always Referred to Himself As the Son of Man and the Son of God

The Lord Jesus is truly amazing and awesome in His ways and manner of speech, especially during His time of ministry on earth. He would speak to some in parables, while others would hear Him plainly. He never dwelt much upon explaining the mysteries of the kingdom of God to anyone who was not a disciple because the secrets are solely for the children of the kingdom.

The reason Jesus always used some beautiful terms to describe Himself wasn’t really obvious to the Jews because they were not always willing to open their hearts to the message of the kingdom. They would rather a warrior king, with chariots and cavalry of horses came to rule over them than a mere Jewish young man who just loved such a simple and peaceful life among them.

The Bible always refers to Jesus as the son of God when it is talking about His being conceived by a virgin and being born into the world. According to Luke 1: 35, the Bible says, “And the angel answered and said unto her[Mary], The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you: therefore also that holy One which shall be born of you shall be called THE SON OF GOD.” It actually means God in human form. It speaks of His authority and power to heal the sick, open the blind eyes, raise the dead and declare the kingdom of God. This is confirmed because everywhere the phrase, “Son of God” appears, it is used in reference to Jesus as God in human form or the God-Man.

However, the Bible also refers to Jesus or He would always refer to Himself as the Son of Man only when it is a matter of His suffering in the hand of wicked men, His death and resurrection. Most importantly, He also referred to Himself as the Son of Man when He especially is talking about His second coming. One particular example is Matthew 24:30, which says: “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN with power and great glory.” This means that, Jesus as the Son of Man has a different dimension from Jesus as the Son of God. For instance, when Stephen was about to be stoned, he mentioned seeing Jesus as the Son, not of God, but of man standing at the right hand of God.( Acts 7:55–56). Only Steven and some other disciple, probably Like, the writer, had seen and understood what the Son of Man meant. Steven saw Jesus as the son of man but those sanhedrin did not. In fact, they rushed out against him thinking he had blasphemed.
