There was this lecturer in school who always told us that our degrees would be given to us in character and learning, and we could be denied those degrees if our character was not acceptable. I really don’t know if that statement was factual, or if he was just trying to threaten us, but there is no denying the fact that our characters are very important, and they determine the outcome of our lives.
Faith Oyedepo said that the foundation of our lives is our character, and a faulty character would cause anyone to crash at the end.
I’m not a big fan of old Nollywood movies, but I bet you have seen some movies, or perhaps heard stories of girls, who were getting ready to be married to someone, and perhaps a few weeks to the wedding, her fiance broke up with her because of her character.
A bad character will cost you more than you would know. How would the world know that you’re born again? Isn’t it when you show the good character that a life that has been changed by God should show?
That is why it is important for you to ask the Holy Spirit for help in case you have issues with your character. In Galatians 5, Paul listed what the fruits of the spirit are. He listed love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control as the fruits a christian will show. Did you notice that Paul used the word “fruit” to describes those virtues? Fruit means that as a christian, you are not supposed to struggle to show this character. It should come naturally because the Holy Spirit will be working inside you to make it happen. However, if you don’t yield yourself to the Holy Spirit, then you will not show this good character, even if you are a christian.
