The Deeper Life Bible Church’s General Superintendent, Pastor W.F Kumuyi, anchored a recent Monday Bible Study where he spoke directly to his members. He spoke about apostleship and the influence of Paul on the Corinthian Church. Paul was not convinced by the spiritual state of the Corinthian church members, so he told them about his heavenly salvation experience.
Pastor Kumuyi, on the other hand, proceeded deeper into the study by reading 2nd Corinthians 9:11–12, which reads
“if we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? If others be partakers of this power over you and not we rather? nevertheless we have not used this power but suffer all things lest we should hinder the Gospel of Christ“
Paul was speaking directly to the Corinthian church, who, despite all of Paul’s good attention, instruction, and time, appear to have gotten carried away and are unconcerned about his physical needs. They were only ready to impact him when it came to things of the physical after watching him perform miracles, preach, and accomplish other spiritual things.
Pastor Kumuyi, on the other hand, warned his congregation not to act like the church in Corinthians. He stated that the church’s apostles require assistance and that church members should not be led astray by the notion that these apostles are accumulating a large number of money, but rather should endeavor to assist and help them. He claimed that they (full-time workers) only go about their spiritual responsibilities with complete dedication and sacrifice.
Most of these workers, like Paul, have given up their employment and are dedicated to God’s mission, and they are in desperate need of financial and physical assistance from church members. Members of the church may not receive their entire attention in church if they return to their different jobs, thus these men of God have taken time to commit themselves to God’s work in order to be available to serve us willingly. We should be able to comprehend and appreciate their efforts, and we should assist them in any way that God is assisting us.
Paul however contrasted the church at Corinth to the church at Philippi who always communicated with him concerning giving and receiving. In Philippians chapter 4 : 14 & 15 it says
“Notwithstanding he have well done that he did communicate with my affliction. Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only”.
Pastor Kumuyi, on the other hand, challenged his congregation to adopt the character of the Philippians church, which talked with Paul about his needs and was able to physically help him without him asking.
Finally, our ministers require both financial and in-kind assistance. Regardless of their relationship with God, we should be able to assist them in any small manner we can, and it is God’s responsibility to bless us. The man of God concluded his sermon by pleading with God to provide all of our wants.
