Asake: Nigerian Afrobeats singer accused of disrespecting Christianity in Only Me video.

Asake, the Nigerian Afrobeats artist, has caused controversy and faced allegations of disrespecting Christianity in the music video for his new song Only Me.

Asake is seen wearing Christian attire with a halo above his head in the video. The singer tosses money at his dancers, who are also dressed up, causing them to fall down.

The video debuted on Thursday and has faced significant criticism on social media.

The BBC reached out to Asake’s management for a comment, but they have not yet received a response.

One user on X wrote about Asake disrespecting the Christian faith in his music videos.

Within the video, the dancers perform the refrain of Only Me, continuously chanting “we get money.” Although the song’s lyrics suggest a self-centered individual, the music video could be interpreted as a parody of persuasive religious leaders.

Many social media users have condemned it.

“Asake is making fun of Christians with his controversial music video,” another user commented on X.

It’s not the first instance where the Grammy-nominated musician faced criticism for incorporating Christian imagery in his music videos.

Asake faced criticism last year for the music video for Bandana, his joint project with Fireboy DML, featuring black goats in a church setting. People are visible in the pews around him, each with a flame above their heads.

Asake fans are urging him to remove the video.

“Shame on you, buddy. One fan expressed their admiration for your music but found the depictions in your latest video to be absolutely insane.

“Could you kindly remove this video? This goes against our Christian beliefs. One Instagram user commented, “Create your music while being mindful of others’ religious beliefs.”
