Instead of misleading their congregations with vacuous and escapist proclamations of spiritual protection and immunity against COVID-19, and instead of emphasizing virtual tithing and other virtual forms of giving when people are trying to survive a pandemic, they have dusted up their medical training to join the effort to fight the virus.
This does not take away from their faith or their belief in God’s ability to protect and heal. Rather, it reinforces it because God works through humans and gives humans talents and knowledge to help humanity in periods like this.
Even if the circulating photos of the couple in medical gear in the suburbs of Abuja is a photo-op, it is a powerful symbolic message of empathy to the general public and an even more powerful message to their clerical colleagues that faith and ameliorative works are not opposed and can coexist.
