How Cheribum and Seraphim Church splits to over 500 Groups

Moses Orimolade is the founder of Cherubim & Seraphim Church , established as a Church on September 9, 1925. The church started as the Aladura band (Praying Band). He was later joined by Abiodun Akinsowon, who became the first visionist.

In less than four years after its inception, there were symptoms of skirmish between Orimolade and Captain Abiodun. All attempts to patch up the relationship failed. The two factions, which resulted from the disagreement, did not help the situation. To make matters worse, a group of youths who sided with Abiodun, flattered her by impressing upon her that she was more popular than Orimolade. They further encouraged her to break away.

After some time, she left to form Cherubim and Seraphim Society in 1929. This was the first division amongst the Cherubim and Seraphim Church. Then, the Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim was formed by the western group after several failed attempts to unite Abiodun with Moses.

As the Movement was recovering from the shock of this schism another disagreement arose between Orimolade and the Praying Band within his own Church. In 1930 the enlightened members in the Praying Band made a bid to rob Orimolade of the leadership of the Society by turning the Praying Band into an autonomous body in a draft constitution submitted for the registration of the Church.

As these worrisome developments raged on in Lagos, the leaders of the branches in the Western part of the country appealed for a truce. When their appeals fell on deaf ears they registered their displeasure by inaugurating a separate organisation: The Western Conference of the C & S (Nigeria) under the leadership of Madam Christianah Olatunrinle who was appointed its first General Superintendent

The Holy Order of Cherubim and Seraphim movement was formed next by the Northern branches while the initial church, the Aladura band, was renamed Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim with Moses Orimolade as the founder and Supreme Head (Baba Aladura).

As if these were not enough, in 1932, Major A.B. Lawrence, one of the leaders of the Praying Band announced that he had a vision to establish his own organisation. Consequently, he launched his Holy Flock of Christ Church.

Immediately after the demise of Orimolade in October 1933 there was a hard struggle over who was to be next in succession. Apparently, Orimolade has appointed Abraham Onanuga, though a late comer but a gifted prophet, as his successor over another prospective leader, Peter Omojola, who was Orimolade’s own senior brother. A faction which felt that Onanuga was not qualified to succeed Orimolade encouraged Omojola to start his own church. He seceded and launched his Eternal Sacred Order of the C & S (Mount Zion).

By 1934, the movement had split into six divisions. The Schism within the C & S movement did not abate from the early years of the church but by the 1996 considerable unity began to emerge. In 1996, about 48 members of the Cherubim and Seraphim Society were under the Eternal Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim led by Dr. G.I.M. Otubu. The schisms that rented the Church in its formative years later continued.

A section of the church alledged that, Pa Moses Orimolade must have cursed the church saying “Division shall never seized or end amidst you” Each succeeding year gives birth to multiple splinter groups within the movement. Today, there are hundreds of splinter groups scattered all over the country each claiming to be the headquarters of the Cherubim and Seraphim Society of Nigeria. There is probably no sect in Christendom that has suffered so much splintering as The Cherubim and Seraphim sect. It is worthy of note however that in spite of its splintering tendencies all the C & S groups have adhered to virtually the same beliefs and practices.

Efforts have been made to unite the different factions of the movement. Abiodun made an unsuccessful attempt in 1935 after Orimolades death. Another attempt was made in 1965 to unite all the C&S groups; this effort was successful to some extent as the C&S churches were united under the umbrella of National Council of Cherubim and Seraphim, the leader of the movement in 1996 managed to rally together fifty two groups, but divisions resurfaced again.

Today through the efforts of Rev Mother Esther Ajayi and some other leaders , 32 different groups have come together under the umbrella of the Cherubim & Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria ,under the leadership of His Most Eminence Prophet (Dr) S.A Alao and the Moses Orimolade University, Omuaran stand tall as a fruit of the union.
