Opinion: If Benson Idahosa was still alive, CAMA wouldn’t have been a discussion

Christians in Nigeria will always remember the late Arch-bishop Benson Idahosa for his immense contributions and defensive stand he once represented among Nigerian Christians and the entire Christendom.

Opinion: If Benson Idahosa was still alive, CAMA wouldn't have been a discussion

Idahosa was a man who spoke and stood for what he believed without being afraid of any man, organization, or government. He was a man that was dreaded by the low and mighty, weak, and strong. If Idahosa was alive today, judging from his antecedents, the current CAMA saga wouldn’t have been a topic of discussion at all.

On 7th August 2020, the Federal Government passed into law Companies and Allied Matters Act, a law that grants the Corporate Affairs Commission, through a supervising ministry, the power to regulate the activities of religious bodies within the country.

According to the amended Act, the supervising minister has the right to sack, appoint members of trustees, and also close the accounts of other charity organizations, including religious bodies.

This new law has started generating a lot of concerns from various bodies around the country, with many seeing it as a coordinated attempt by the Federal Government to exercise oppressive control over churches.

Though some prominent clergymen like Bishop Oyedepo and Primate Ayodele have since staged the battle of words with the Federal Government, it has become clear that the Christain Association of Nigeria has decided to pay deaf ears to the recent development.
