Chairman of The Christian Association of Nigeria Reacts to cancellation of church Reopening

To all our Eminent and revered Church leaders in Lagos State, Calvary greetings, in Jesus Name.

AN APPEAL FOR INTENSIFIED PRAYERS, IN PEACE AND CALMNESS TOWARDS DIVINE VICTORY.

As you are fully aware, C.A.N. EXCO and leaders of the five Blocs of C.A.N, have continuously been in dialogue with the Lagos State Government, since the pestilence of Coronavirus invaded our Nation early this year. The State Government has been in constant consultation with C.A.N. and certainly, with some Church leaders in the State.

Twice in the past three weeks, our beloved State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has had  virtual meetings, with us and the Muslim leaders in the State. These two virtual meetings were also attended by a number of prominent Church leaders from the five blocs of C.A.N, who either attended personally, or by representation. In attendance once or the two times, were Baba Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, G.O. of Deeper Life Bible Church, Rt. Rev. Chukwuemeka Uche, Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Rev Dr Mercy Ezekiel of CPM, Pastor Obayemi, the National Overseer of RCCG, representing Pastor E.A. Adeboye, Pastor Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain, RevDr. Sam Aboyeji, G.O. of Foursquare Gospel Church, Rt. Rev. Olumakaiye, the Anglican Archbishop of Lagos, Pastor Ladejobi, representing Pastor Daniel Olukoya, G.O. of M.F.M and Rev. Paul Ananaba of The Seven Day Adventist Church etc.

The most recent virtual meeting was on Saturday June 13 and was attended by the State Deputy Governor, Dr Femi Hamzat and some other cabinet members. The Commissioner for Health, Professor Abayomi, an internationally -renowned Professor of Medicine, took time to give detail figures and indices with professional explanation to us all, on the Coronavirus pandemic trend, in Lagos State. It was not encouraging, but we continued to encourage ourselves in The Lord our God and insisted on opening the Churches on June 21, 2020.

The Deputy Governor spoke passionately on the present situation and the trend elsewhere around the world. The Governor listened carefully to all in attendance, as usual. He made it clear to all in attendance on that day, that he would still consult with other stakeholders in the Society before taking a decision based on the reality of the moment.

Today, he took a decision based the facts available to him as the Governor of the State, in the interest of life and security of all the peoples of Lagos State. He stated his reason clearly, that based on the available data and trend of the unfortunate manifestation of this pandemic as at today, it is not safe to open the Churches and Mosques for regular fellowships. Hence , the postponement of the opening that was originally approved for June 19 for mosques and June 21 for Churches.

Doubtless, many Churches were fully prepared while many others were preparing aggressively for the expected opening on Sunday, June 21, and would have certainly been disappointed!

Nevertheless, in all situations, as people of God, we must rest in the grace of God’s Word in Romans 8:28.

Therefore, on behalf of the leadership of C.A.N. Lagos State, I am appealing strongly to all leaders of Churches, Ministers of The Gospel of Jesus Christ and all Christians in Lagos State, for necessary understanding, calmness and peace in this season. Most importantly, we need to intensify our prayers much more now, so that The Lord will hasten to perform His Word, in taking this Coronavirus pestilence away from our land.

Furthermore, please, let us do all things as guided by our God, through His infallible Word in

Romans 13:1-7, 1Peter 2: 13-15 and 1 Timothy 2:1-4. Please, let us continue to intercede for The Church of Jesus Christ and those whom The Lord has put in authority to rule over us, that we may continue to live a quiet and peaceful life, in our dear State of Lagos, to the glory of God. In patience, we will possess our souls (Luke 21:19). Our Lord and Master Jesus, will continue to build His mighty Church, and the gates of hell shall never prevail against it. This Coronavirus pestilence, has already been conquered by our God, and will soon be a thing of the past, in Jesus Name.

God bless His Church and bless us His people, in Jesus Name. Amen.

Thank you and God bless you sir/ma, in Jesus Name.

Apostle (Prof)

Alexander Bamgbola,

CHAIRMAN
