One thing that differentiates churches is the doctrine, one thing can be allowed in one church and in another church, it is not allowed. There was a time when the Deeper Life Church congregation were not allowed to watch television, although, at the moment, they take advantage of it’s use positively, to spread the goodnews of Jesus Christ. With the emergence of the Covid19 pandemic, churches have has to switch to online teachings, the television and internet service has been very useful and positive indeed.
Deeper Life Church during some of their programs air the teachings of pastor Kumuyi, without the change in that doctrine, it wouldn’t have been possible. They also air their programs on national TV to win souls, isn’t that amazing!
Sincerely, anything that is used abnormally and addictively can yield negative results, in controlling these kind of issues, some people manage the situation while some decide to get rid of the situation entirely like Deeper Life banned the use of TV. The fact that the Church can backtrack on such a decision is a sign that they listen, they grow, they observe and they evolve. Beautiful quality!
One of the most vocal men of God politically in Nigeria today is Pastor Tunde Bakare and he is someone who actually started his ministerial journey in deeper life. He is a very objective man and the point where the church called the TV a devil’s box made him leave the church.
He was born into a Muslim family in 1954 in Abeokuta, Ogun state and he attended All saints primary School and Lisabi Grammer school, at the age of 20, he converted to Christianity.
The Unilag alumni who studied law was so involved in politics that he publicly criticized Obasanjo which led to his arrest in 2002 and probably the reason why he was picked as Buhari’s running mate in 2011, a position that is filled by Yemi Osinbajo.
Before starting his own ministry, the Latter Rain, he served as a pastor in RCCG and Deeper Life. He may not have left Deeper Life if not for the Television situation and particularly, the way Kumuyi handled the situation. Although, Bakare credits Kumuyi for helping him get instilled in the fear of God.
“The person that put the fear of God in me was Brother Kumuyi. He laid the foundation for systematic teaching that many people see me do today. However, I rose through the ranks. I preached while I was there and conducted youth meetings.”
How did the TV box scenario occur? He was preaching and he had an interpreter by his said, Bakare had seen an advert on TV and he used it as an illustration, also mentioning that he saw the illustration on TV, when he mentioned the TV, the interpreter said devil’s box.
It went this way- “If you have been watching the devil’s box … “ I told him I didn’t say devil’s box but television, and he repeated saying the devil’s box and Brother Kumuyi was behind us. I said I didn’t say devil’s box and that the normal interpretation is amu ohun mu aworan, (the box that captures both the voice and the visuals). Anyway, he still said what he said.”
The amazing part was how he explained how pastor Kumuyi agreed with the brother which made him leave. Pastor Kumuyi at the time even said if as an electrician, you repair a TV, you are a child of the devil. Bakare carried his Bible and said he would go and serve God on his own and he wasn’t interested in church issue.
He has been married for over 30 years and is still and will be happily married by God’s grace.
