The Bible is filled with remarkable individuals, ranging from courageous military leaders to wise prophets, who are celebrated for their exceptional strength and admirable qualities. When it comes to strong figures in the Bible, people often think of men first. However, it’s important to recognize that there are also many inspiring women in the Bible. These women not only lived remarkable lives but also displayed unwavering faith, even in the face of challenging circumstances. It is unfortunate that women’s stories have often been overshadowed by the interests and needs of male Biblical writers and leaders in Christian churches.

However, this does not diminish the importance of their stories, especially in the eyes of God. A strong woman is someone who isn’t afraid to confront difficult situations. They have a strong sense of self and conviction in their beliefs. By fearlessly leading by example, they inspire others to be brave and create positive change. I have compiled a list of the eight most significant women in the Bible and highlighted the valuable lessons we can glean from their stories.

Mary, the mother of Jesus

Mary of Nazareth, who is also known as Mary, Mother of God, Saint Mary, Virgin Mary, and Blessed Virgin Mary, holds a special place in Scripture and is highly revered as one of the most esteemed figures. Many consider her to be the greatest among all Christian saints. She willingly served and placed her trust in God, faithfully obeying His call. Although she lived a life of great honor, her calling also demanded immense suffering. Being a mother brought immense joy, but it also came with a lot of pain, especially when you have the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah. However, she displayed remarkable obedience and submission to God’s plan, despite these circumstances. She never allowed her life to diminish Jesus’ glory because her purpose was to bear witness to the glory of the Son of God.

Ruth

Ruth’s story is truly captivating and presents significant challenges to many people. She is a widow from a nation that is considered an enemy, and she doesn’t have any promising opportunities. However, God’s presence is incredibly powerful in her story and He uses it to inspire millions of people. In the beginning of the book, Ruth is residing in her home in Moab, a place and people that the Israelites disapproved of. In addition to that, she had experienced the loss of her husband and was currently residing with her mother-in-law who was also widowed. Additionally, she experienced the loss of her husband without having any children. There are some speculations that she might have been unable to conceive. Ruth must have experienced immense pain, but she didn’t let her past hinder her progress. Ruth’s faith was truly remarkable, especially considering her young age. She had faith that there was still a purpose waiting for her in the future. Having faith means believing that God is exactly who He claimed to be. She had faith that God would provide for her and Naomi. We can be inspired to become better followers of Christ by her bravery, faith, and obedience.

The story of Esther is truly inspiring. It tells the tale of an extraordinary woman who showed incredible bravery by putting her own life on the line to protect her people. She was a principled woman who was ready to prioritize the lives of others, even above her own. Even in the most stressful situations, she was an exceptional role model for serving others. In the Bible, Jesus Christ spoke these words: “There is no greater love than when someone sacrifices their life for their friends” (John 15:13). In our day-to-day lives, things can often feel quite ordinary and predictable. However, there are certain moments that stand out and define us, when we are faced with the choice of prioritizing our values over our own personal gain. Throughout the centuries, people have depicted her in various ways, viewing her as promiscuous, possibly being married to Christ, wealthy, a prominent disciple, adulterous, and even as a symbol of feminism, among other descriptions. The way Mary Magdalene is often portrayed in popular culture doesn’t really do justice to her story or accurately represent her as a devoted follower of Christ. Even with numerous reinterpretations, she continues to be a powerful and enigmatic character. Mary and the other women, along with the twelve, were putting themselves in a risky situation by joining Jesus. After John the Baptist was arrested, Jesus felt compelled to take action. John the Baptist spent a significant portion of his ministry in the region of Parea, which was under the rule of Herod, specifically on the eastern side of the Jordan River. After John was imprisoned, Jesus decided to continue his ministry in Herod’s territory of Galilee. This move was seen by Herod as both a challenge and a threat. Mary Magdalene was fully dedicated to Jesus’ ministry, even though there were risks involved.

Eve

Eve is known as the first woman on earth, as well as the first wife and mother. She has earned the title of the “Mother of All the Living.” Despite these impressive achievements, there is limited information available about Eve. God possesses feminine qualities as part of His character. The purpose of God’s creation would not be complete without the equal involvement of women. Adam’s life teaches us a valuable lesson, and that is that Eve also shows us how God desires us to willingly choose to follow and obey Him because of our love for Him. God sees everything we do. Similarly, it is not advantageous for us to hold others responsible for our own shortcomings. As individuals, it’s important for us to acknowledge and take ownership of the consequences that result from our actions and decisions.

Elizabeth

In the Bible, it is often mentioned that many women faced challenges in conceiving a child. In the past, being unable to have children was seen as shameful. We often witness women who have unwavering faith in God, and time after time, God blesses them with the gift of a child. Elizabeth was an extraordinary woman. She and her husband Zechariah were both old, and she had already passed the age of being able to have children. However, by the grace of God, she miraculously conceived. In the temple, the angel Gabriel delivered some news to Zechariah. However, because Zechariah didn’t believe what the angel said, he was rendered unable to speak. Elizabeth became pregnant, just as the angel had predicted. Mary, who was pregnant with Jesus, paid her a visit. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s voice, the baby in her womb jumped for joy. Elizabeth gave birth to a son named John the Baptist. He was a prophet who predicted the arrival of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

Rachel

The story of Rachel’s marriage in the Bible is truly captivating. It’s recorded in the book of Genesis and tells a tale of love prevailing over deceit. Rachel remained loyal to her husband despite her father’s deceitful actions, which strongly suggested that she had a deep love for Jacob. Rachel, a significant figure in the Old Testament, gave birth to Joseph. Joseph played a crucial role in saving the nation of Israel during a famine. She also gave birth to Benjamin and was a loyal wife to Jacob. Even before they got married, he had a deep and intense love for Rachel. However, Rachel believed, influenced by her cultural upbringing, that she had to have children in order to win Jacob’s love. The reality is, we don’t have to do good deeds in order to deserve it. Grace is the source of his love and our salvation.

Hagar

The name Hagar has the meaning of ‘stranger’. She came from Egypt and was never fully accepted by the tribe. One of the main themes in Hagar’s story is the belief that with God, anything is possible. When Sarah reached menopause and realized that God had promised Abraham to be the father of many nations, she started exploring different ways to fulfill this promise. She didn’t have enough trust in God to let Him handle the situation. Sarah was unable to have children, so she decided to follow a common practice of the time. Sarah volunteered her servant to help Abraham. When Hagar got pregnant, Sarah became jealous and kicked her out of their home. She was discovered by an angel, all by herself in the desert. He made a promise to bless her child and named him Ishmael, which means “God hears”. Hagar responded by saying, “You are the One who sees me.” After 14 years, Hagar came back to Abraham’s household. Sarah had her own son at that time, and once again, she made Hagar and Ishmael leave. They went back to the desert. Once again, God heard their cries. They managed to survive and thrive. God had promised that Ishmael would become the father of a great nation, and he fulfilled that promise. Hagar symbolizes the women in the Bible who are often left out or looked down upon. This situation could occur if someone is without children in a society that highly values motherhood, similar to Sarah’s experience, or if someone is enslaved in a society with a strict hierarchy, like Hagar initially was.

The Bible acknowledges and celebrates the worth and importance of women. It offers us valuable spiritual lessons and insights through the lives of its various characters. These eight women from the Bible have a lot to teach us. These women who were devout in their faith may have lived in societies and times that were completely different from ours, but we can surprisingly learn a great deal from them.
