Can Reading the Bible Help Me If I’m Struggling with Depression?
The response found in the Bible
The answer is yes because “God, Who soothes and encourages and refreshes and cheers the downtrodden,” is the most effective source of assistance.
Scripture reference: 2 Corinthians 7:6 from the Amplified Bible
Power
Strength is what God offers to those who are dejected in order to aid them. You are “refreshed and cheered” by God not because he takes away all of your difficulties, but rather because he answers your prayers when you beg for the strength to cope with them. (Philippians 4:13) Because the Bible states that “Jehovah is near to people who are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit, he saves,” you may be confident that he is eager to hear what you have to say because of this verse. (Psalm 34:18) Even if you are unable to adequately express how you feel, God can still hear your cries for aid and respond accordingly. —Romans 8:26, 27.
Superb Illustrations
Excellent illustrations One of the people who contributed to the Bible pleaded to God, saying, “From the bottom of my pit, I cry to you.” This psalmist overcame his despair by constantly reminding himself that God does not weigh us down with our own guilt. Instead, he addressed God with these words: “If you maintained a record of our transgressions, who could possibly avoid being condemned?” However, you choose to forgive us in order for us to respect and revere you. —Psalm 130:1, 3, 4, as translated in the Good News Bible.
Hope
Hope. God has promised, in addition to offering consolation in the present moment, to eliminate all of the difficulties that contribute to depression. “The old things [including depression] will not be called to mind, nor will they rise up into the heart,” it says that when he meets his promise. —Isaiah 65:17.
Note that while Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that God may be of assistance in times of need, they also seek professional medical care for conditions such as severe depression. (Mark 2:17) However, we do not recommend any particular course of medical treatment since we believe that every individual ought to be free to choose how they choose to proceed with their own health care.
